Ill keep this short as possible, but would like advice if available.
I took out a contract with Hampshire Council in 2009 on the basis of being employed as a 'Kitchen Assistant' KA's earn just around the £6.80 P/H mark here.
This weekend just gone, Another worker (dose same job as me, no more/no less) Was hired as a 'genera assistant' and gets £1 more an hour for his job.
He was there 2 years before me, so I expect the useal rise for him as well ect.
However, Another guy was employed as a 'Genral assistant' about a year ago, I get on alright with him, yet his English is bad, and basically washes up, Had to tell him how to make coffee for the residents, make sandwich's ect ect. He had no idea.
When I work, I work - yet he complains if there is 'too much washing up, or he is pushed to do more' Evil or Very Mad
In regards to his contract, he is still on £1 more then me P/H and I see this as unfair, as I do, do alot more then him.
Ive been offered the 2nd Cooks job, as I have proved to them Im competent with everything - But again, its the pay...
I really do not want to get on the wrong side of the boss, but if I say something about his pay/My pay am i fair... Do I ask for a new contract to be on the same pay scale as him, or what?!
Im just stuck I guess.... I like my job, some work mates are brilliant, just some staff seem to take the mick, and now this has come to light I dont know if I should talk to the boss or not without causing conflict.

It's public sector employment. Salaries and wages don't have to make sense and do not have to have any bearing on reality. If the council are short on cash they just ramp up the old extortion tax and break some legs if people refuse to pay to scare others into paying.

Ask for an interview with your boss and ask politely for a wage rise, your well within your rights to do so.
Outline the fact you know your other colleagues are on more but dont be bitchy about it, cant hurt to try.
Tbh though you wont notice much of a difference after a quid rise after tax etc, you know your boss and wether its worth asking.

You can, and you are, but nearly 20 years of working in the public sector tells, me it aint gonna happen.

All of our jobs are allocated a pay band, you generally go up one point a year until you get to the top of the band and then you stop. The only way to skip across pay bands is to get promoted into them. There is also often a qualification band, which is a ceiling that is as high as you can go unless you have a relevant qualification (social work degree or nursing diploma for example)

Louise, it sounds like the job role given to the general assistants is at a higher grade to yours. You can definitely request that the new job be at the same pay scale as your colleague, but it might not be a decision your manager can make (or it might, depends how autonomous they are). It wouldn't hurt to enquire though, as if its a more responsible job, it should be at a better band/scale.

Generally the only way round bollocks like this is to apply for the next general assistants job that comes along. Its all dead mans shoes I'm afraid...

Just say " Do you think that under single status my wage is fair?" If this does not help repeat the sentence to your union rep.
