Anyone use one, either built-in to your lid or seperate? How do you get on with it?

Took my shiny new HJC FG-15 with anti-fog coating and breath deflector out for a test today, and wasn't impressed at all. It was OK if I remembered to breathe through my nose but as soon as I forgot and exhaled by mouth I immediately misted up, and because I was mostly fairly low-speed urban riding I found I still needed to do most of the journey with the visor cracked open - even then I was steaming up when I stopped!

Will be taking the breath deflector out for the next test to see what difference it makes - I did notice that at least it kept my mouth & nose marginally warmer while the visor was open lol!

However, I'm suspecting that the problem may be that it's cos it's a one-size-supposedly-fits-all deal. I reckon that to be effective a breath deflector would probably need to fit fairly snugly around the mouth/nose area? This one didn't at all, the tip of my nose was only just toucing the bit of the deflector that I reckon should be up on the bridge of it somewhere so there was quite a massive space around the edges of it.

So I was just wondering how the rest of you get on with them if you use them? Am I doing it wrong? Laughing

I use a foggy shield in my lid, used them for years. They are not 100% or even 80% deflective but you do get some, about 60%, effect. It also depends on how heavy you breath and if you have big breaths.
I like mine though and feel naked without one in my lid. They are also great for cutting out wind noise if you are using an Autocom.

Don't ever sneeze in one though. Sick

I have one in my HJC IS16, never had any problems with it, though it is the only helmet I have ever owned so I dont know any different.

I never had problems with fogging up till it started to get really cold.

I think it makes the helmet look better too, and also feel naked without it.

You have an FG-15, which is pinlock ready. Spend the £20 odd quid on the pinlock. I fitted one to my FG15 and doesnt mist up now Smile

Hi

Tried one years ago. Problem I found was that it tended to direct a small amount of breath up either side of my nose, straight under my glasses so steamed those up.

All the best

I use a breath deflector in my Shark lid.
I have to crack the visor open if stopped in traffic, as it starts to fog up.
I have always used mine and felt naked recently when I lost one while riding! (itchy nose, loose deflector, no way to stop and retrieve, boohoo)

It doesn't do the job very well. I'm convinced it helps, but not by enough to buy one separately for its anti-fog.

Does look cool though Very Happy

I have the IS16 as mentioned above, Its a tiny one in that and I believe it works, But you have to breath through your nose.

I find that without opening the visor when stopped the visor starts to go a bit blurey, I guess rather than steeming up.

I also tried one years ago and had the same problem.

Jo, does your lid have a pin lock compatible visor?

I bought one as an option for my Shoei Raid and I think it's rather good; doesn't matter if I breathe through my mouth or nose, I don't have any misting problems under most conditions.

If it does mist up, my lid has a device which just cracks the visor open, not enough to make it draughty, but it does clear the mist.

As said though, my breath guard does fit snugly to my nose and face, so that probably helps.

I have the FG-15. Still mists up with the deflector in BUT it mists up a hell of a lot more without it, if it rains or is cold I fit the deflector as it is pretty much unbearable without it.

Pop the visor open one notch and with the breath deflector it doesn't mist at anything other than a prolonged standstill. Main problem with the deflector is that it makes air flow into your eyes which is a bit annoying, especially if it is really cold. Brother wears contacts and it dries his eyes out.

Seeing as pretty much everyone has an fg-15, how do you rate them as I may be getting one this month?

I wear glasses, it's entirely possible that it was them misting rather than the visor I suppose cos it's difficult to tell the difference when everything is misted up!

I had it open just the one notch. Breathing thru my nose wasn't too bad but if I forgot and exhaled properly I was misting - cleared pretty quickly but still happening.

Seems that it is pinlock-ready, I'm not sure what that means so may have to look into it........

HD apart from this misting issue I like it a lot. Much quieter than my previous lid (a Suomy Dark Metal), like having the tinted visor option too. Didn't do any prolonged spped riding today though (as I said I was mostly urban) so will report back when I do!

Found out it was rated 4* on the Sharp thest though, which is nice......

First off, get a pin-lock if you can, work really well.

Then, I had a stick-on breath deflector. It left marks in my forehead like I'd been fighting with a cat!

I prefer using a buff, 'gimp mask' or old t-shirt.

Few years back I tried one of those that attach with Velcro in the front of your helmet, it worked, if you didn't breathe...

Only thing I use now is a Neck Buff/Tube and leaving the visor open on the first notch, I use it all year round now as having a random Bee/Wasp/Largeflyingthing whack you in the throat on the motorway is slightly off putting, got a fair few now as I always forget to wash the things right up until they start to hum so it's easier to throw that one in the wash and grab another, freshly washed one... Thumbs Up

I use them to lift shite out the litter tray They are designed for that task.
They do not stop misting.

I use a neck protector to just below my beak.

Worn over the nose is a bit claustrophobic and it get a bit damp with breff.

I used a pinlock insert in my old lid and quickly realised that the problem was my glasses misting over and not the visor, and consequently rode with my visor open most of the time.
When I got a new helmet, the problem was even worse, so I dropped 12 quid on a Foggy insert. After much faffing and adjusting I've managed to get it as right as it's gonna get and it deflects about 80% of my breath.

I'd say if you have specs, a foggy is worth a go.
