BCF, how safe is e-bay, i have never used it but i have found a rather good item, expensive but cheap if you know what i mean but the Luddite in me is most skeptical, especially when in comes to sending money to the other side of the world.

Could you get stiffed, or are there safety measures.

Cheers.

I tend to try and not buy from overseas on ebay, mainly becuase it takes absolutely ages to arrive etc, but if I can't find it in the UK, then I will.

As long as their feedback is good and you pay by paypal, rest assured, you aren't going to lose your money.

If you don't receive your item or have any problems with the seller, ebay will always get you your money back.

Delivery times are longer for countries outside the EU, and you may have to pay import duty, so a bargain may not always be what it seems.

With PayPal so long as you don't leave things too long you can hardly go wrong, although you do need to trust them with a credit/debit card and be on the look out for phishing scams!
I often use Paypal for other online buying too, often as not because I know my password and don't need to rummage about to find a credit card.

I've found buying one or two items from Germany and the USA not a problem, with things coming from Germany within three days and about a week from the US.

If you don't use eBay/Paypal a lot then get someone who does to look over the auction for you. Overseas is a little more risky but if you are buying a new part from a store that sells new parts with a good feedback score you're pretty safe. If you're buying used from an individual check out their history. Watch out for anyone who likes to list parts as 'untested'.
EBay wants part listed as 'used' to be fully working, otherwise they should be listed as 'not working or for spares' but many sellers flout this, and if they are overseas they are pretty certain you aren't going to go chasing them for your money back.

avoid anything overseas like the plague

I shipped a pair of leather jeans to thailand as the guy had good feedback, then fecking parcelforce gave them to fedex to deliver without telling me, fedex couldn't find his address apart from me emailing parcelforce everyday for a week with the recipients cell number and the recipient enquiring with the post office in thailand, fedex then returned the goods to parcelforce uk and I had to pay £35 to get my own shit back from them, then ebay refunded the recipient in full so I lost £95 shipping as well

screw ebay, screw parcelforce, screw sending stuff abroad

Just like some of the other guys said - avoid buying from overseas if you can help it. I personally have never had a problem with eBay, i've bought and sold loads of things and never encountered a scammer or anything. Smile

what is the item?

remember if it looks too good to be true it usually is.

I have bought stuff of ebay from overseas before with out problems but they have usually been cheap things that cant really go wrong. I probably wouldn't buy an expensive electrical item or similar from an overseas seller

This is what i got from another boat that i am after, but all reply have been basically the same. scam ??

This boat is available and it's current location is Europe, i can ship worldwide and if you want it in UAE i will send it there, the prices are this:
boat price : 7.500 USD converted is 5.800 EUR
shipping price : from Europe to UAE will cost you 1.400 EUR
Total price including boat, trailer, shipping, 4 jackets, manual and documents handling: 7200 EUR

It's in perfect condition without any mechanical problems , no damages or hidden defects , no need for additional repairs , clear title without any accidents , liens or loans . All the documents and papers .
The pictures speak for themselves.
The motor just had a fresh oil change and lower unit lube. The compression is equal on all cylinders and within factory specs. The trailer is in excellent condition. The tires are good and the lights work. Overall this is a very nice boat that is in great condition, it runs excellent and has no known issues.
I wait for your response in case you are interested , see the pictures.
Payment will be by bank transfer.

I want to make this transaction through eBay Vehicle Purchase Program, we can close this deal fast and safe for both of us . If you agree on the full purchase price , we make all the arrangements for the transfer of the title of property and the other details . I require your full name ( street , city , state , zip code , phone number ) .
As soon as I have them I'll start the official procedure , and eBay Company will notify you about this with payment and shipping instructions . You'll also receive important guidelines + instructions from them ( please go through them exactly ) .
Also , a refund policy will be included .
You will have 3 days to inspect it and in case you find any damage/problems/bad description you have the option to reject it and have a full refund , in this situation i will have to pay for the shipping price and the return.
There are 2 other potential buyers for the boat at the moment , so I'm waiting for your email ASAP

Engine make: Volvo

As blatantly obvious as any scam could be. They want payment through bank transfer = you're going to get robbed. Pay cash on collection or PayPal only. Western union is another way people try to scam you as people are easily tricked into thinking it works like paypal, it doesn't! It essentially turns money into a unique code, anyone with that code can claim the money. So if anyone mentions any of the following it's a scam:
Being out of the country for an extended period.
Having a secretary/brother handle things.
Western union
Nigeria / Uganda
Paying more than expected and having the difference refunded.

EBay is fine to use as long as you use it smartly.

If you are buying something via. eBay, pay ONLY by:

1) Paypal.
2) Cash on collection.

If they are unhappy with either of those and demand Western Union/Bank Transfer/Via Prince Nadarajeem of Nigeria then just walk away.

Make sure they have good feedback, 99.5% or higher and have sold a fair few items, send a message to the seller first and see how they respond, whether or not they are happy to give a phone number out etc.

We have got a lot of bargains through eBay, and you can too, just make sure you use it smartly and you'll be fine, remember the overriding rule:

"If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is."

Cheers! Thumbs Up!
