As above, got into my road cycling and want to do a bit of offroading now.

No idea what's best for the dollar though!

Not that up on this price point or XC.

I had a Boardman FS Comp (full suspension) which cost me £510 secondhand in good nick. A little longer travel than your average 'XC', but I found it worked really well and was happy doing XC events on it.

So I'd be tempted to look for a secondhand Boardman HT (hard tail) if I was looking for a bike at that price for cross country style stuff.

For the money i would stay away from any thing with rear suspension.and go with a hardtail frame.chainreaction cycles are good place for'you to have a look..

If you can't find something decent 2nd hand then I'd look for a 2010/2011 bike with a decent discount.
Something like a 2011 Scott aspect 50.

I don't own one but nearly bought one last year, general reviews seem to be that the frame is decent for the money, but some of the components are a bit naff and it only has hub brakes. But at least with a decent-ish frame you can upgrade bits if you want at a later date.

This is by far the best spec new bike for the money.

https://www.decathlon.co.uk/rockrider-53-2011-id_8168118.html

Alternatively if you don't have a decathlon near you then the next best is this for brand new in that price range.

https://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_810721_categoryId_165499_langId_-1?cm_sp=Intelligent_Offer-_-Product_Details_Zone_1-_-Blank&iozone=PDPz1

or second hand i would look at the Carrera Fury, currently the best sub £500 Hardtail money can buy, so used ones you could probably pick one up for £300 ish. Yes they maybe Halfords, but when set up right they are better specced than any of the mainstream bike brands of the same price. Just get a local bike shop to set it up instead of Halfords and you have a awesome trail weapon.

I picked up my Marin Eldridge for £500. Was a year old at the time with a set of Fox forks. Been a brilliant bike.

Would of though you should be able to get hold of one of these or similar for a bit less.
