Your battery is flat. Duff battery or a duff reg/rec unit. Do you have a multimeter?

The clicking noise means the starter motor isnt getting enough power to turn over.
Check for loose/dirty connections and check the battery. If its an older battery it might have run dry and need topping back up with distilled water or it might just need a good charge or even replacing.
Most garages will load test it for you for free.
Does the headlight get brighter when you rev the engine?

Hi

Another vote for a dead battery, although a dead starter motor or dead starter relay are both possible.

Think if the regulator / rectifier had gone the bike would have died within 60 miles as the ignition system wouldn't have enough power.

All the best

Keith

It's been leading to this slowly but surely, the odd day it would happen and has got more frequently.

It's just reached 29k miles, I hope it's not going to throw the magnets off the rotor...

I'll take it to the garage for its service and get them to have a look at the battery, hopefully it'll be just that then!

Cheers

Batteries are a service item and need replacing every so often. Every two years is the norm.

We have had the magnets go on 2 GPZ500s.

First one it occasionally wouldn't turn over. Stick it in gear and give it a push and it would probably start. But do the same and have it not start, then try the starter motor and it would also likely start. This the magnets were jamming the crank / flywheel to the stator.

2nd one ran fine, just had very little electrics. On this I think one of the magnets had chopped a wire on the stator. It still charged the battery but nowhere near as well as it should have done (you got a shade over 13 volts at best, idle with the lights on you got well under 12V).

All the best

Keith
