Please excuse my ignorance - when I wring its neck higher in the rev range, the engine it suddenly increases in pitch, and really starts screaming, and jumps a little. Is this normal? It happens at a specific point rather than gradually.

It will have a rev limiter to stop idiots self-destructing it.

this is way below the rev limiter, I think it is around 7-8k revs.

Sounds like clutch slip, higher revs it will be coming to max power, a lot go like that at first then it starts to get worse at lower revs as well. It could run OK for ages or go downhill pretty quick but you'll know when you have to get it changed out.
An outside chance it may be just a wornish tyre spinning up on a slick road surface at this time of year which could explain the "jump" as well.

Sounds exactly like clutch slip.
I had it happen on a bike after taking a year or two off from riding. I get it a fist full and the revs shot up to the limiter in half a second. I instinctively changed up a gear thinking "SHIT THIS THINGS QUICK!" Before noticing i wasn't actually going any faster Laughing

Does it have a push rod which actuates the clutch from the hydraulic thing?
They are located right by the front sprocket and get gunked up then stick - not fully released - resulting in the clutch apparently slipping but really it's just not engaged fully.

I had the very same problem on my fazers - a new set of clutch springs sorted it out - £6 and about 15 mins of extra work during an oil change. Worth checking.
