What about roundabouts? How to build one? How to follow a lane? How to ride around one?

Basic advice:
- Get in lane early.
- Follow said lane
- Indicate left just before your chosen exit
- Check shoulders
- Get slammed into by the car that didn't see you

Should have explained. No1 daughter just passed her CBT but she's not that confident on roundabouts.

Buy a copy of the Highway Code. It's a couple of quid out of WH Smiths or similar. It's all in there.

Congratulations to her Thumbs Up

If I were ye I'd probably stick her on pillion and go out somewhere with a lot of roundabouts (don't know how close you are to Milton Keynes Laughing ) and show her the way.

Much better to do than read about.

I just saw a biker nearly run into the side of a car on one of those small roundabouts. Three way traffic, he was coming down, as a car was coming our from his right. The traffic going up was probably blocking his view. The car thankfully looked and waited for it to go passed, but it could've been much worse.

The small four way roundabouts are stupid, nobody ever knows when to go, and if you're on the left side road, good luck trying to get out at all. People certainly need to be educated on them.

Magic RB has nothing on our very own Essex Sadlers Farm IMO. However, it's being carved up at the moment to stick an underpass through it - it really is a total highway planners' trouser accident moment

That's right, a roundabout made up of 5 smaller roundabouts connecting 3 major and 2 minor routes. Bonkers.

Multi-lane roundabouts can be very confusing, so she has my full sympathy.

This is a roundabout near where I live. Now to go straight on over the roundabout (2nd exit) I take up the left-hand lane:
https://i1213.photobucket.com/albums/cc469/Ninja_Butler/random/Untitled1.jpg

And I stay in the left hand lane:
https://i1213.photobucket.com/albums/cc469/Ninja_Butler/random/Untitled2.jpg

Simple yes?

No. Sad

What actually happens is that if you don't get into the right-hand lane, the traffic waiting to pass as you pull onto the roundabout (first photo) goes BEEEP! BEEEP! and drivers give you dirty looks wondering why you are crossing the roundabout instead of turning left.

Then as you pass the next entry (where the two blue cars are in the second photo) the traffic goes BEEEP! BEEEEP! and sometimes somebody slams on their brakes and shouts out the window at you.

(note: it's a 2 lane roundabout, not 3 lane)

It's bad enough in a car never mind a motorcycle.

Thanks for the replies. We're off out for a ride tomorrow so I'll make sure we take in plenty of RB's so she gets plenty of practice

Only watched the first few minutes of video 2. I stopped when he suggested using the middle lane (of 3) when turning right Shocked

Didnt bother with video 9.

Easy way to remember the basics:

Imagine the roundabout is a clockface and you are entering at 6 o'clock.

If you are exiting before 12 o'clock use the left hand lane.

If you are exiting after 12 o'clock use the right hand lane.

Assuming the road markings don't suggest otherwise.

https://www.direct.gov.uk/prod_consum_dg/groups/dg_digitalassets/@dg/@en/documents/digitalasset/dg_070540.jpg

If following the Blue line a Right shoulder check before committing to the exit.

If following the Green line a Left shoulder check before changing lane for the exit.

Simplistic I know, but for low powered bikes probably the safest. Thumbs Up

Understand the nervs of roundabouts when I first started riding it was the main thing I hated. Although don't agree with the pillion/following someone else as you are always being spoon fed what to do that way.

Best way I found to handle roundabouts was just getting stuck in or going in front of the instructor in this case you. That way you can cover her encase anything goes wrong but she isn't following you.

If there is a bus or artic.......

Give them lots of room, and don't get on the inside of them while they go round.....

Does this rule apply for 2 lane bouties with 6 exits? i'm always in the left lane at 6 oclock when looking to leave at 11 o clock (3rd exit) but often find insiders cut across me

Don't do what I did with a courtesy bike that had more power than my own bike.......

I dumped the clutch on a RD350YPVS and went halfway round the roundabout on the back wheel and got the front down just in time for my exit. I pulled up after the exit and nearly wept.

I'd never pulled a wheelie before. It was back in 1993 and it still gives me cold sweats thinking about it.

Ah yes Sadler's Farm. I have to negotiate that fucker every day, twice. It's even worse with all the road works going on at the moment. Neutral
