Tidy enough bike - great for a first big bike I'd say. If you have cracks in the fairings and don't want to bother changing them, get down to your local double-glazing shop and buy a pot of their cyano glue, it's just thick superglue but it cures more slowly and is a lot stronger. I glued my ZZR1100 fairings up with that stuff and they were badly cracked like a spiders web.
Go easy on it until you get used to the speed and keep your stopping distance. Enjoy. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

That plastic panel just below the little glovebox thing cracks at the first sign of any pressure on the side of the bike, as mentioned above, glue it and don't worry about it, you'll just crack it again the first time you clip something or drop the bike
Pps good choice, they look a little old and lardy but the motor is right up there with the GSXRs and ZX6s of the day. Wait till you take the restriction out, the mid range/top end rush on it will feel insane. ____________________ 2010 Triumph 1050 Sprint ST |

Lovely, a ZZR without a psychadelic paint scheme, how did that slip through!
I wouldn't change it unless you are getting it professionally done or are very good at spraying. Even with scratches, it will look better than a home paint job.

@Roger - It is a lotta bike, but it makes biking so much more pleasurable than pushing a 125 to 60mph with a full throttle just to keep up on fast A road. Not checked if it's restricted, but the guy who sold it to me seemed genuine, and it seems to have been restricted for a while too (according to the certificate). Also it seems to struggle to rev past 10K. Which is not what I've heard about the bikes.
@Seb, cheers for the heads up, I was considering replacing it, but if it is that delicate, might as well just glue it and live with that. And the old and lardy nature is exactly why I wanted this bike, I can't stand all the pointy fairings and stuff, need to be comfortable
@Polarbear - Yup, I consider myself very lucky, not a fan of those garish reds & purples I usually see on this bike! |

Wait until you try and an actually fast (not restricted bike)! Modern litre bike will accelerate at least as fast faster at 100mph as yours does at 10mph I reckon . |

Grats on the bike. Looks tidy enough. And as many said, dont worry too much about the cosmetic side of things. The chances are it will get dropped or laid down at some point until you get used to the extra weight and higher seat.
I came off a 125 cruiser onto an old 750 unrestricted and I would imagine even restricted there is something special about riding down the road overtaking the traffic rather than being overtaken by the traffic.

God yes. I can now safely and confidently overtake people doing 50mph in a 60mph in a matter of seconds rather than wait for a mile long stretch of straight road and rev the 125 in 4th until it feels like it's gonna blow up under me.
Saying that though, the ZZR does have a very evident flat spot at about 4K from what I can tell, and I keep changing down, when all I need to do is rev it past 4K. At which point it goes like shit off a shovel.

I'm very glad I still have craziness like that to look forward to, just getting this bike unrestricted in 2 years will be a pleasant shock to the system I think. Because of the restriction, it stops revving at about 10-11K and I've heard it can hit the 14K redline and still push on...
Speaking of revs though, coming off a V-twin engine, the inline four makes me think I'm working the bike too hard! Anything above 7K, I feel like I'm damaging it when I know it can do much much more! Still thinking about the old bike I guess... |

Nice bike .
I loved my first ride on my (unrestricted) CBR600, came back grinning like a pedo at playschool.
Very nearly shat myself tbh, I couldn't believe bikes were allowed to be that fast, still riding it now and it still surprises me how quick it can move when revved up properly.
That said, it isn't a race, enjoy the bike as a learning tool, take it steady and increase your pace gradually or it can quickly get out of hand. Have fun . |

Starting to wonder if it is actually restricted, found a very open stretch of road today and it certainly revved up to 14K (only in 1st mind, too scared to do it in 2nd) and seems like it will crack 100 fairly easily. But I expect it would be a bit madder if it wasn't restricted.
About the exhausts, the back is definitely very shiny, washed the bike today and was surprised myself. And there certainly is a flat spot around 3.5k - 4k. So further pointing towards restrictors.
| Quote: | Check some of the ZZR specific forums. I'm sure there is guides to sticking older fireblade Nissins on a ZZR. By all accounts they are vastly better than getting OEM or EBC replacements. | Something I do plan to do at some point, but it's the discs that seem to be the problem right now, not the calipers. So need to replace the discs (what are the other options with pitted discs?) and then think about new calipers.
| Quote: | Very nearly shat myself tbh, I couldn't believe bikes were allowed to be that fast, still riding it now and it still surprises me how quick it can move when revved up properly. | Seriously, it is bloody difficult to not rev it up every chance you get as well since the bike seems so much happier at high revs instead of being an asthmatic cow at 1-4K.
Cleaned the bike, cleaned & lubed the chain today. Ran out of chain wax though, so need to buy something to lube it with. Engine oil seems the cheapest option, will probably go with that instead of the ludicrously expensive specialised stuff like Wurth. |
