Tyre valve gave up mid corner... crashed

...and I've had first and hopefully last crash of 2012

Was riding around since about 9 this morning, heading back from broadstairs through deal and dover.

Came to this road...

Was leaning over to go round heading down the "hill."

As I got about half way I felt the back wheel wobble and squirm.
Shit my pants and closed the throttle to try and stand the bike up but it just fell to the floor

Following car driver stopped to help me up and had a compressor to re pump my tyre up. Was totally flat. Had a look over the tyre, no damage to tyre at all. When pumping the valve sounded dodgy but they gave me a valve cap to get home.

I have really screwed my back up and I'm off to hospital as I can hardly move, managed to get home after 40 miles of motorway in agony.

Sucks mate, hope the back gets better! Weird suggestion but a good Osteopath can help quite a bit, at least once you're over the initial pain of it. Hope it's nothing too serious.

Is the bike ok or a bit messy?

It's strange that it let you pump it back up, I've had a valve go on my last bike, luckily it just let the air out slowly, until you touched it then it rushed out. I used selotape around it to get it home then when i got it to the bike shop for a new valve he prodded it and it flew off!

Get yourself a new valve, sorry to hear mate.

Did it have a valve cap on at all?
Having seen someone buy a bike that it turned out didn't have a valve in at all (just a valve cap) working ok bar a slow leak, I'm convinced of their worth now and do mostly try and keep them on.

I had three front-tyre deflations on my 'busa inside of a couple of weeks, turned out it was a weak schrader valve spring, and cetrifugal forces were causing the valve to open at speed just from the weight of the schrader insert. I went to Watling tyres to get new valves, and I told them my story then they showed me a bulletin from BMW suggesting that metal valve caps should be fitted to any of their bikes if they were likely to be ridden over 100mph routinely.

I bought two new valves and two caps. Took the insides out of the new valves and swapped them for the ones from my bike. Whilst they were out I tested them against each other and the spring weight was miles stronger on the new ones. I could push them together top-to-top and one spring would compress fully before the other would even move.

I reckon this is what's happened to you Paddy.

Bike, not a state at all, I was its cushion, the exhaust has a slight dent/scrape on the Carbon Can logo, but thats about it. Burnt hole in trousers from engine casing, but I'd rather than than be stranded miles away.

Currently have about 3 types of pills to calm the pain and hopefully settle the muscles... I think I've damaged a part of my spine though, its unbearable to touch and any neck movement is a bit sore, so off up the hospital as soon as a car arrives.

The valve has been replaced and tyre re inflated by a nice guy in a Micra who stopped to help me up. Was off on my way home after about 15 minutes of calm down and checking bike/pumping tyre.
Got the guys number and let him know I got home ok, going to ask for address and send him something to say thanks for stopping and being he-man lifting the bike off me.

A bit annoyed at myself really, I know I couldn't have had much impact on a dodgy valve, I had checked my tyre pressures, was down by 1psi, but took that as its pretty much on spec, i'm not dragging the compressor out for 1psi.
If I had done, I may have noticed the valve was loose/leaking but we all have hindsight.
Could have also possibly done something to save dropping the bike, never really been in that situation and unsure how else I could have handled it...but its really annoyed me and I just need to get checked and have some rest, maybe i'll calm down later

Oh G, it had a valve cap, but I think it may have had a crack...so its just pissed out of the tyre quickly... quick enough for me to have no time to do anything

May have to unattend the all you can eat now though Need to buy me some new shoes and trousers

Valves are cheap & always over looked untill they pack or play up.
Sorry to hear it caused a crash.
Definitely pays to check pressures when you fill up at the garage or other regular prompt, even if it's only a basic is it squidgy test.

Ouch. Would go along with Pete in the suggestion of the dodgy valve. Also check the valve stem itself (I have had these split through on 3~4 occasions, although fortunately only once when moving).

I have had a valve go down once at speed. Front tyre on the Bimota. Only noticed as the speed dropped down to about 100, at which point the plenty of space to slow for the end of the runway suddenly got worryingly short.

I only use metal caps on my bikes. They have a rubber gasket inside to prevent this sort of shit happening.

Did your ABS not cut in and save your bacon though?

Or you don't have ABS?

Great to hear that you're limping-wounded, but FFS get yourself down to A&E, you could be aggravating a spinal injury.
