Its being billed as a cheap commuter, sounds like a decent bike to me.
Maybe a bit gutless for an experienced rider but would also be a good first bike.

Meh for that sort of wedge I'd be looking for a CBF500 or 600.

This is the new Honda multi-purpose design. They also make scooters with the same chassis. So essentially you are riding an uncomfortable scooter!

Commuter heaven though, agreed.

There's an article on the NC700 in the latest edition of Bike magazine.

Probably worth a read if your thinking of buying one.

The horsepower isn't stupidly low for 700cc especially @ 6K RPM, whats the torque like though as thats going to be more useful on this. A Bandit 1200 is ~100bhp so ~50bhp for a 700 putting out high MPG isn't that bad...

For a commuter, and if you were racking up a lot of miles in a mix of urban/A roads i reckon it'd be alright.

Buy a CB500 for a grand, OK the MPG isn't as good but the four grand you save can buy a lot of petrol.

After getting my first fuel injected bike with various electronic gizmos, i'd much prefer a more modern bike than CB500. Plus i hate carbs.

I reckon this bike launch needs to be tied up with the https://www.geton.co.uk/ campaign.

Need to encourage some of the 4million Cat A holders to get back into biking, even if its just save money on their commute.

See previous discussion thread.

So basically they've made a bike that is bigger, less powerful, no more efficient and more complex than the CB500 they were making ten years ago.

Eh, that.

To me, the NC700X version looks like a lardier, thirstier BMW G650GS, which makes the same 35kW power and 60 torques with a similar redline. They're both pitched square at the new 35kW A2 license coming in next year. Longer service intervals on the Honda, lower depreciation on the BMW, looks pretty much honours even. If you wanted a bike like the NC700X, you could have ordered it last year with a BMW badge on it.

Granted, there's (reportedly) a waiting list for the BMW, so there might very well be a market for the Honda. The price is certainly right, especially on the NC700S with ABS as standard.

But as for it being revolutionary? Hmmm. I won't be lining up to get it, at least not until we see if the reliability actually matches the promise of the 8000 mile service intervals.

I will say this, it looks good, but would need to be 40+ kilos lighter and about 10-15bhp more before I wanted one.

Actually, quick note, that's the NC700X up top.

NC700X:

The NC700S loses the "adventure" plastics and the ride height is slightly lower:

If they offer a 0% finance deal on this bike then it'd definitely be at the top of my shopping list, I'm currently looking around for something new to replace my ER5 (for an 80 mile a day commute), the NC700S could be a perfect workhorse for me.

My BMW K75 has about the same fuel economy and weight but 15 horsepower more. And a shaft drive. And higher spec brakes. And another cylinder.....

Spend 1500 quid and get a tidy late model K75.

I'm struggling to see the appeal personally, the power output doesn't bother me in the slightest but I'd be a lot keener if it wasn't so heavy. At least the Beemer gives you more dignity and presence with it's weight.

Put it alongside an SV650 and ER6 and I just don't see the point in it for anything other than meeting the A2 restriction right out of the crate and especially not as a day to day commuter bike for someone with a full license.

TBH if he's going to spend 5 big ones.

He might as well get something like a BMW R1150RT

Though TBH I'd probably go for the K100 instead of the 75
