PostPosted: 18:27 - 17 Sep 2004    Post subject: 33BHP 4-stroke?? Reply with quote

Iv looked at some of the other threads in here and theres various lists and things but not really recomendations. I passed my test yesterday Very Happy and quickly need acceleration times that arnt measured in years!!

Can anyone recomend a good 33bhp 250 4-stroke? Im likeing cruiser/touring bikes more than sports bikes really, though i think most sports 250s are 2 stroke anyway.

any help appreciated as im confused about it all

Most 250 4 strokes are a fair bit lower power than that, especially cruiser/tourer ones.

Why are you limiting yourself to a 250cc?

The Suzuki goose is 33hp, but is quite sporty.

Personally I don't like/understand cruisers, so can't comment, but they usually have not-much power, so the 600cc or so ones probably make around that power.

A dr350 (trail bike) is 33 hp, as are a few others. You could also look at something like the Cagiva Canyon or River (trail and commuter) respectively.

Personally I'd go for a more powerfull bike and get it restricted. That way for no extra out lay you can have what will make your bike feel like a whole new bike.

ok, but that will push my insurance up surely??

what is there that is 33bhp then? iv seen some lists but when iv looked at some of them the have been over. Also i like the look of the old honda cb350, sort of 70's time, but the hp is stated at 36. how easy is it to legaly bring this down a little bit?

cheers. Phill

had a look at some of these you have entioned. The suzuki goose looks brilliant but insurance might be a problem. A loan from my wonderful parents might be approaching.

You could get a sports 400 (60bhp), resrtict it, then when the time comes for more power, you de-restrict it and have a half decent ammount of power. It will handle and brake well, as well.

*EDIT* You dont want a sports bike. NP you can get 400s with no fairings, and a slightly less power. CB-1 Cool . Honda Bros, etc. I cant think of anymore. Goose is a pretty cool bike i think. Except not much room for expansion with regards power.

Can also get a ZZR400 and RF400.

Get some insurance quotes; remember it's based on the insurance group of the bike, not the engine capacity. For instance a bandit 1200 is NU group 12 I think, believe the RVF400 is NU group 12 as well.

I think the Cagiva River is group 7; same as a NSR125.

Ring around a few places and get some quotes, may well be cheaper than you think. Where do you live and how old are you?

Don't forget about the 500's, there really cheap on insurance as there only group 7/8 and an tour, scratch etc.

Have a look at my 500cc FAQ Link in my sig.

Thanks for all the advise people. Think im going to try and get a goose as many people on the net say this is a very good bike. I dont really like the idea of restricting bikes even a little simply because they are not designed for it, plus i dont want something mega expensive as its going to be used in the winter. Though saying that my gs125 never seemed to be harmed by the rain, hail, snow or whatever else i chucked at it as long as i gave it a bit of care.

conclusion is im going to think a bit more, but strongly leaning towards a goose at the min.

Phill

PS. G - Im 19 and live just outside newcastle and its a fairly crime free place.

There's lots of small naked bikes out there - though most are imports from Europe or mainly Japan. Parts will/may be difficult to get hold of, and insurance may be abit steeper than you'd expect as a result, but there's no harm in having a look around and trying.

Here's a quick list of some imported bikes I could find which you may be interested in.

*figures may or may not be accurate, but they give a rough guideline

There's a few more aswell, but they're the ones I could quickly find on the 'net. They're all naked bikes, and many are based around a sports bike engine, like the Suzuki GSF Bandits and the Kawasaki ZRX so they offer the best of both worlds - there's also plenty of cruisers out there;
Honda Shadow & Steed 400's, Magna 250, Rebel 250's and the Rebel & Shadow 125's,
Kawasaki Vulcan 400, Eliminator 250 & 125,
Suzuki Intruder 400, 250 & 125, Marauder 250,
Yamaha Dragstar 400, 250 & 125 & Virago 250.

They are all under 33bhp, in some cases well under it, unlike most of the naked bikes which can be nearer 60bhp - but it is very easy to restrict them to 33bhp as it is with any bike (especially with carb's) often by simply putting washers in the carb or exhaust or with the throttle on FI bikes. And as they're all naked or cruisers they'll not be as pricey as their sportsbike cousins and can often be picked up very cheap.

I love the looks of the Goose too, never rode one but I've rode with Scotty who was on his (though I think everyone's ridden with <- highlighted with before any smutty comments arise! Scotty who uses these forums lol) and I was on my Rs250 and with a group of 125 2 stroke's, and it really shifted and it looked really balanced on the corners despite the leaking fork seal - and the Zorstec system he had on it sounded & looked great!!! He may still have that actually...?

Out of the list it's the one I'd go for too, and it meets the 33bhp limit too which is handy!!
