I really need some advice on which bike to get, I'm looking for something that will get me from Birmingham to Newcastle and back at least 3 to 4 times a month on the A1.

I need some ideas on what bike will be able to munch these miles without going pop on some obscure stretch of road miles away from civilisation. Fuel consumption and comfort obviously a big factor and obviously it's got to have personality.

Oh and one more thing it has to be reasonably priced and cheap on insurance... Not asking for much but, hopefully you guys will have some ideas for me.

Thanks

Usual suspects I guess, Honda CBR6 or the VFR, Yamaha Thundercat, Kawasaki ZZR6, SV650?

Any preferences in aesthetics?

Would the two Honda be ok with the high miles and hours on the motorway?
As for the Pan, I couldn't do it

Full licence or CBT?

CBT, I'd be going for something along the lines of YBR/CBF

If it was full licence, go with something basic and bulletproof, CB500/CBF600 or the usual GPZ/ER/GS500 group.

Why couldn't you do it?

Both the VFR750 and CBR600F will be fine on the motorway. IME experience the CBR returns decent mpg on a motorway run.

What, like at either end of your journey? Razz

Is a Diversion (600 or 900) too lacking in personality? I suspect you've already got a bike in mind. Care to drop any hints?

If you haven't got your licence: get your licence.
If for some reason that's a big issue, I'd go for an NSR125, but would consider a CBR125.

With your full licence:
GPZ500 for economy.
CBR600F or ZX6R G/J for a bike with some spirit.

You haven't mentioned a budget either.

I'll have my full licence in May, decided at 17 just to wait for my 21st, save being restricted to 33bhp, give me some time to save some money for a nice bike... This didn't happen.

I actually have no comeback to that, well done you've insulted my birthplace and where I'm moving to in March!

I think the Diversion is actually quite a good looking bike buuuut, I do have my eye ZX-6R but of the few people I've spoken to who've owned them they say that they are notoriously unreliable "if you want a knacker buy a Kawakker"

The CRB is also a very very very nice bike...

I have around £1500 to play with.

What sort of riding are you going to do when not slogging it on the motorway?

EDIT:

I'd rather be doing the mway miles in a car tbh, boring on a bike, potential for significant discomfort if weather is crap, and being wiped out by an inattentive driver in heavy rain does not appeal.

I commuted on mway for 6 months, deadly boring, which led to taking silly risks to make it more interesting. Wasn't saving me much time so I sacked it off and got a banger.

I can't afford the insurance/running costs of a car even with 4 years no claims... Some how, my bike insurance carries onto my car insurance N/C because I have a full car licence, don't know how this happened but I'm not complaining.

Other than the motorway slogs it'll just be commuting, I'm going to be living in Newcastle city centre and will be on uni placements at hospitals all over Northumbria/Newcastle and surrounding areas so having a bike is just easier.

I've been told motorways are boring but A-roads are actually quite fun, and the A1 is apparently a mix of the two and besides I think the constant fear of death will keep me attentive enough to what's going on. Hopefully.

If you are getting a 125, wouldn't recommend the overly cramped CBR125. Had 3 or 4 now... only because they came up surprisingly cheap and I have billions of spares.

For £1500 i'd be looking at YBR125's possibly even CBF125's.

If you are looking for the bigger bikes, you could possibly net a CBR6 or a ZX6 for that. Definitely a ZZR600 which would be fine o motorways. Guy on here runs to and from Maidstone to London everyday on a 1995/96 ZZR and it seems to be suiting him fine Thumbs Up

Ah, the toon, a great place, 'tis my home town. Excellent roads around there - go toward Rothbury North West of Newcastle for some great roads or south through Co. Durham onto the A689 to Alston, then down the A689 - Hartside pass onto the the M6 for a nice alternative route to the cesspool which is Brum*. Razz

*I've never been to Brum, but I might as well slate it!

I'll be living just off the Chillingham road NE6, any idea what it's like around there? Actually looking forward to getting out of the arsehole end of brum and maybe just maybe ending up in somewhere half decent on/in/up(?) the toon. You guys have your own language!

The A1 will be 'near as boring as a motorway.
You may find you sometimes what to take a more fun route, but for this sort of journey you often just want to get there is as quickly as reasonably possible.

That's a big run.

Can I suggest a K-series BMW?

Not the cheapest but you'll get an older one for a reasonable amount.

It's going to cost you a fortune in tyres because it's mostly motorway or major A-road and they'll land up square in no time. I'd SERIOUSLY consider darksiding it (running on car tyres). Obviously there are major pros and cons with doing this so research on the subject would be a good idea.

That run, 3-4 times a month is going to see you doing in the region of 1600 miles per month even if you don't use it for anything else so service intervals may also become an issue.

VFR is another option. It truly is a multi-purpose bike. Oil changes every 9k miles. What I did with mine when I was dong a lot of motorway work was to buy a spare rear wheel (about £60 off ebay). I kept a sports tyre on one and a cheap touring tyre on the other. Takes about a minute to change the wheels over (assuming you've fitted a high level or LHS exhaust). Five minutes if you kept the exhaust standard and need to move it out of the way. The downside is that it has a chain drive.

Going up and down the A1 is boring as fuck by the way. It's also got loads of roadworks on it at the moment where it's being upgraded to 3-lanes with a 50mph limit and SPECs cameras.

I used to live off of Chilly Road, Stannington place. Had a car window smashed, and the campervan keyed.

Make sure you lock your bike securly in the back yard, out of sight.

Its full on student central so stuff getting nicked is a nightmare. We had two break ins when we were students, but none when we lived there for 2 years privately.

Its a 20-30 minute walk out of the toon, or a quick ride on the number 1.

Despite my negativity its a nice place to live, enough stuff to be self sufficient (tesco's, pub's, sarnie shops etc) but close enough to the city for a decent night out.

Couldn't afford the BMW.. but have looked at the VFR and from what you've said it actually sounds like the ideal bike for me, Honda reliability and being able to run it on a shoe string sounds quite appealing. The MCN review for it is quite complimentary too, looks like I've found the bike, hopefully now one will come up for the right price near me. Thanks for all the information.
Everyone keeps saying that these long slogs are boring but I love just being sat on my bike so hopefully I'll be able to handle it and if not I'll just have to put up with it and maybe buy an ipod. This time next year I'll probably of been put of bikes for life.

Yup, I lived on Whitefield Terrace for a year, which is a couple of streets east of the Chilli Road, but that was 10 years ago.

It is a student area really, well served by the #1 bus into town - altho, plenty of shops on the Chilli road to buy usual provisions, but you probably wouldn't want to go drinking, not due to danger just as it wouldn't be as good as the town. Heaton is a safe area, but not a rich one, as I said mostly students, young professionals and some ethnic communities - which again improves the food available.

It's probably improved even since I lived there as I suspect a lot of the students would go back to that area as young profs. You'll have a yard for your bike, but I'd get a ground anchor and chain it up - my mate had his (now mine) bike nicked from his yard in Sandyford, which is a better area, but there is a social housing block right next to it full of undesirables.

Newcastle city centre and its bars have become more poncey since I lived there, more expensive, and it is always rammed on a weekend. On the plus side, if you enjoy clubbing, the iconic Shindig has been reborn and is attracting big names (like Sasha) - I was up there at the start of December and it was a good night.

It is genuinely a great city, compact city centre, attractive buildings, great surrounding countryside, and has it's own idedntity as it is not part of a wider conurbation. You should enjoy it - I've not met anyone who hasn't.

At least now I know after my bike gets nicked by the fucker that broke into my flat I'll be able to go grab a bite and have a drink.
Seriously though, thanks for all the info, I tried looking at it on google maps and it just looked like a new estate so not too bad. From what you've said though it doesn't sound too different to where I live now which is alright I suppose.

Long journey on a sports bike - expect to have your wrists hurting towards the end of the journey Smile

I'd go for something a bit more situp - FZ6, Hornet etc

That reminds me, a crampbuster really does help on longer trips. I leave mine on even for my short commute, I don't even notice it's there now.

Most of Chillingham road and the surrounding is Victorian Tyneside flats, which part you moving to that looks new on Google Maps? PM me if you don't want to disclose publicly, I promise not to come and nick your bike Laughing
