I have started a cafe build, I've seen loads of things on others bikes that look like they would break the MOT law, does anyone know of a guide that helps you sail close to the wind? Example being the angle of the registration plate... do I need four indicators, etc.

There will be no 'guide' to circumventing MOT and construction and use regs. Your best bet is to try to get hold of the MOT guide and use that.

The way I see it you've got two real options:

1.) Make the bike how you want and then sort it for the MOT

or

2.) build it to the regs where you can, and tweak any bits that need tweaking.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

Well I've been going to the same guy for years, and he passes all my bikes, most without even looking at them Laughing

Hi

If you had seen the long waiting lists that are a regular feature of Northern Ireland MOT tests you wouldn't wish government testing stations on anyone.

All the best

Keith

PS - if you are going to keep using smilies then you need to untick "ignore smilies" when you are posting

Thanks everyone.
The reason I asked initially was that I saw a reg plate on a single line of text, which I liked.
Then I saw a reg plate side mounted which I really liked.
Then I saw a reg plate in ye-olde black background with silver numbers/letters and thought to myself.... wtf! are the rules here?
There does seem to be considerable scope for creativity, and interpretation of the rules, nice really!

The owner/rider can pass the MoT then do wot he/she sees fit after and trust that the Law doesn't mind/see/know.

Plates have to be a certain size and colour dependant on age of bike at first registration.

I think single line is outlawed on more recent bikes at least from 1998 anyway.

I see loads of bikes/cars with no obvious regard to the regulations but it is like big fat birds wearing leggings.
The things you see people do don't make them legal.

Hi

Single line plates aren't legal and don't think they ever have been. 3 line plates used to be legal but are no longer legal for newer bikes (think the cut off is around 2000). Black plates are only legal on older vehicles (cutoff in the early 1970s).

All the best

Keith

Same for Jersey. Not the waiting list bit but there's one testing center for the island and they are very strict - much more than here in the UK.
