Hi there,

Looking to get a gs500 and keep it in the garage until my cg insurance runs out.

found this on ebay:

https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260932369688

what do you guys think?

Also, anything specific i should be concerned about when purchasing this particular model of bike?

thanks!

Don't know if it's a common bike and easy to get parts for i assume it would be.

Providing there's a bit of recent service history/mot's and it was fine on a test ride i'd take it.

Not much info there but low mileage for the age, short mot though check if it is in need of any work.

Somebody else on here should be able to advise you better, let us know if you get it. Thumbs Up

There are loads around, but can rot quickly around the frame welds.

With those vague photos (and the amount of crap (s)he has stuck onto it) I would probably give it a miss at that price, unless you can take a good look and test ride first.

No huge issues to worry about - they are pretty robust - but the carburation can be an arse at times. If it pulls cleanly through the rev range once warm with the choke off, then it should be ok.

If it stutters at all walk away as it could be either the fuel tap is knackered (or the fuel pipes are on the wrong way round) or the valves have tightened up, and the shims are not cheap for the GS.

As a guide, I got my minter 2001 GS500K1 with 20k on it for £850 about a year ago, so £600 is a bit high for that. Unless the mileage is genuine of course, but I'd be wanting to see all the previous MOTs and service history if it "is".

It looks a right mess - the stickers scream walk away to me - I would hold out - as others said you will find a much better example for that price, especially you don't seem in a massive rush.

Aim for one with a black engine.

Silver engines look gay and produce less power.

Buy an XJ600, same mpg, smoother to ride, less shit (only just)

Then don't. It's an "honest" ad in the sense that it's just telling you that there's a bike for sale, but unless the seller wants to can the Johnny Tightlips routine it's not worth a 300 mile round trip. You'll put yourself under enormous pressure to buy it regardless of how dodgy it seems.

I'm not convinced about the 500s being that great for shorties.
I'm just above average (5'11.6" I think to be precise) and never felt them that low. They do tend to be fairly thin however, which can make a decent difference for some.

Contrary to the above, they are good for short riders.

My ex who was a right shortarse (4ft11) could still get on a mk1 GS500 alright.

Yet you like the dodgy parallel twin and lame looks.

You need some bleach introduced to your eyes Laughing

It's just 10 mins down the road from me.

I don't mind going and having a look over it if I get time this week if you want?
