"A motorcyclist is being hunted by police after he was filmed riding at 190mph (300kmh) on a rural road - a staggering three times the speed limit.

Antonio, as he was named in frightening footage uploaded to YouTube, was caught on camera by friends as he careered across Castellon, in eastern Spain

The same way every knowitallknowfuckall does, because it was loud, and if it sounds loud then it must be going fast...

La misma manera cada knowitallknowfuckall hace, porque era ruidosa, y si suena ruidosamente entonces él debe ir rápidamente…

The theory doesn't work though does it...

You can gun the engine from a stand still and hit 30 in seconds, someone could hear those few seconds and judge you to be speeding when you're not, you can't accurately judge a speed from how loud it sounds, you're just plucking random speeds from thin air...

No so...

what about, "Did you hear the noise it made? He must have been fcuking flying...."

Laughing

I think from the video if one is/was heavily into pedant it might be possible to approximate speed using time and distance calculation. i. e. The distance between the road markings and the timer on the video.
Based on the same princepals as Twatso and Truvelo cameras

But I am not pedant enough to do this for ya.

I haven't watched the video, I'm just generalising that you can't always gauge a speed from a sound...

If you're talking about video footage and markers to gauge said movement then yeah you could work out how fast something is going...

186 technically. Unless he's got a TRE. And the course of the story is the Daily Mail, so it'll obviously have no basis in fact.

Also it's in Spain, why is this even relevent to my life in England?

Should be able to hit those speeds somewhere on the derestricted parts of the IOM/Germany's autobahns, yet the Mail's not up in arms about that.

The speed can be calculated from the sound using the doppler effect.

There is software out there used in the R/C modeling world which will take the sound of a plane passing the camera and calculate its speed due to the change in sound pitch.
This is generally considered fairly reliable but with that being said, there is a reasonable chance that a motorbike will make a significantly different sound from behind than infront compared to an RC plane and thus it may require some tweaking/lose some accuracy.

I just want to point out that I was being sarcastic, I haven't even watched the video.

On a related note, I have had some very very loud cars that were very very slow Laughing

Just to put my two pennorth' in. As has just been highlighted, why can I do the top speed whatever I have under me around most parts of the I.O.M but its a jailable offence to do 110+ on the mainland. Its not as if the the mountain stretch is smooth or straight, let alone 'safe'. What the hell changes after a few hours of ferry trip? Oh, an most of the Autobahns are chewed up two laners, maybe its that the Germans are supermen and Manxmen Norse Gods?

germans are better trained and have to do more compulsory stuff than us to get a licence. They also have stricter roadworthy tests.

Our country stinks :p
