Hi everybody,

Hi guys, I need some advice please on the situation in the title, it's a bit complicated though so please be patient while I explain everything.

I live in a shared house, it is basically a normal 3 bedroom house, upstairs is a flat with a locked door at the bottom of the stairs in which lives my landlords daughter her other half. They have access through our part of the house to control the heating and get to the garden.

Downstairs in one room is "P" who is ~40 years old, I've lived with him for 2 and a half years and we've always got on well. His 16 year old son "J" lives with him and has done for about a year now. I don't trust his son, we know he stole an iPhone belonging to the guy from upstairs that was left in our hallway, and he truants from school a lot.

I live in the room next to P's room, my girlfriend Kim lives with me, she has done for nearly 6 months now.

We are not allowed have people live with us so obviously the landlord doesn't know about Kim or J. I'd say the guys upstairs have a good idea though so he probably knows and just turns a blind eye.

Over Christmas Kim and I were away for a few days, when we came back we noticed an "item" of Kim's had gone missing from our room, we know exactly where it was before we left and have checked the whole room, it is definitely gone. Since then we have noticed several items of clothing go missing or turn up in odd places. First of all a long sleeved top appeared in a kitchen cupboard that nobody uses. Next a bra turned up in one of our food cupboards, we put it back out to dry, only for it to go missing again.

This morning we were in the kitchen, there is a storage/utility space under the stairs, Kim spotted the bra hidden behind the lawnmower, she had a little dig around and found a swimming costume that she had only put out to dry a day or two ago stuffed right to the back of the grass box for the mower.

To us J seems the most likely suspect because of the age, the nature of the items, and the fact that he has stolen before. The problem is there are so many people with access to the house that we can't really pin it on anybody.

I'm not really sure what to do about the situation, I've mentioned to P that bits and pieces have been going missing in the hope that he may ask his son, but he hasn't said anything back to me about it. I can't really go to the landlord as neither Kim or J should be living here.

Any advice?

Conan

Can't you just set up a video camera ? seems like the logical solution.

Someone hiding your stuff in your own house maybe someone's idea of a joke, poor I know but...

Is it always her stuff ?

How do you know he stole the phone? and if it all started after he moved in I'd confront the little shit

Are you physically able to batter both the father and son (seperately of course)?

If yes, speak to the father and give it the "I'm speaking to you about this first, out of respect..." and tell him to sort his kid out before you do. Put it nicer than that though. Laughing

If you can't top them physically you'll have to suck it up or leave.

You could lock all your stuff in your room at all times. Nothing'll go missing then.

No real way to live, but imagine this behaviour will only escalate as the perpetrator realises they're getting away with it.

You could always put a cheap bra (a nice sexy one should do the trick, if your suspicions are correct), as a plant, and have a secret camera observing the spot. It should just confirm it. What you do next is up to you, but i wouldn't recommend letting anyone know you hid a secret camera in a shared house Laughing

Either way, no real way to live imo, so move somewhere else.

On a budget of £0 so can't afford to set up a camera unfortunately, it would be the perfect solution.

With the iPhone to cut a long story short, P saw J with it but didn't realise it belonged to the guy upstairs. By the time he was told it belonged to the guy upstairs the phone was long gone. The guy upstairs got it replaced through the insurance so nothing more was made of it.

Considered something very much along these lines. His son is built like a twig and I'd imagine I could take P if it came to it, but I'm not a particularly violent person to be honest.

Nor am I until I get angry. Some cunt thieving stuff in the house would do it for me.

I read the thread title, and now the thread.

My initial reaction is the same, someone is stealing her knickers and wanking on/in/with them.

Its probably the Dad who realises suspicion will lay at his sons feet...

Get a lock fitted to your room door and a nice fat padlock. Or get a lock on your wardrobe door and lock all your valuables in that...less obvious than a lock on the bedroom door.

Or just move out.

The kid's a pantsniffer in training, by the sounds of it. Put a lock on your door. Make damn sure your GF boils those garments if she's ever intending to wear them again, or you'll catch the warped AIDS.

Surely your laptop / desktop has a webcam? They can easily be set up to do motion detection and save the images.

Webcam and motion-detection software, free to download. Catch him in the act then catch him in an alley.

Get a nice pair of pants, rub the inside with Habenero chilli then hang them on the line. He will not steal undies again.

Almost everything has gone missing from the kitchen area where we dry clothes. The bedroom suffers from serious damp issues so drying clothes behind a locked door isn't a possibility unfortunately. Can't really leave the laptop running in the kitchen, it'd be a little obvious and also asking to have that go missing to, or at least invites somebody to have a rummage through the laptop.

The only thing that has gone missing from our room was on Christmas day or boxing day when we weren't here, as far as we are aware nobody has been in here since then. We've kept the door locked most of the time now too.

^^^^^This is the best idea so far and the one I'd go with if I was in your situation.

I think c-dug would have told us if any of the recovered garments were crusty. Neutral

No man crusts Laughing

Still undecided on what to do. I'm pretty certain confronting them will get nowhere.

I definitely like the chilli's method.

Could you not put a clearly visible note saying that "you know stuff is being taken and if it doesn't stop, you'll enquire further and be very angry" or words to that effect. And put it somewhere that would only be entered in search of your girl's clothes. If you do this, I'd pair it with some kind of trap to let you know that the room has been entered.. A piece of folded paper on the floor behind the door that would be knocked over/moved by the opening door etc.etc.. That way you know the message has been read.

Alternatively, SOMEONE you know must be willing to lend an old camera or something that you can set to time lapse?

I certainly wouldn't be standing for what's going on. It's fucking filthy and I'd see it as a personal insult. Good luck mate, keep us updated.

Hmm.. Having a laptop left open (on the bed) whilst thief comes in to steal clothes.. I reckon he would notice and If dumb enough take the laptop!

Thumbs Down
