So I'm considering actually spending a bit of cash on my poor overworked ZZR. It came with a set of Dunlop D208s which have been ok but the 4000 miles I've done since I got the bike in September has finished them off. The rear had a bit of tread so I've been running a Qualifier on the front (£10 part worn Thumbs Up) for a couple of months.

Anyway if I want to be cheap I can get the following on ebay:
  • Michelin Pilot Road (original) - £150
  • Pirelli Angel ST - £190
  • Avon Storm 2 Ultra - £190

I haven't yet called my bike shop of choice on what deals they can do me. But I suspect it'll be between the Pilot Road 3, BT023 and the RoadSmart 2.

Anyone care to share their experiences? I'm not a particularly fast rider and do a lot of motorway miles in all weathers. Something that can deal with some weekend fun would be good too, but I get the impression they would all do it about the same...[/list]

I had Avon Storms on my busa, couldn't fault them Thumbs Up

Good grip and amazingly decent milage compared to the OEM Bridgestones.

pilot 1's mate.

Rag the shoite out of my bike on nothing but pilot 1's.(mainly cos I'm skint a lot of the time) No point spending any more if what you're doing is motorway miles and don't ride quick.

The Dunlop Roadsmart 2s suit the ZZR1100 better than the Avons or the Bridgestones. The wet weather performance is so good it's bordering on unbelievable.

2000 miles of hard, wet, touring later they still look pretty new.

Assuming the 600 is largely the same in how it responds to tyres, they're your best bet by a long stretch IMO.

Pilot road 2's are well worth the extra £40-50 over PR1s. Had mine on for 1350 miles now, probably half that mileage has been seriously wet, with everything in between. Cannot fault Pilot road 2's in the slightest. Still look brand new, and give me all the grip i could ask for!

I'll see what my tyre place of choice (BLD Southampton) can give me for what price before I make any decisions.

I am tempted by the pilot 1s but at the same time it would be nice to have the latest Roadsmart 2/Pilot Road 3 when on rideouts on a hot summer weekend trying to keep up with the nutters I associate myself with.

Looking at my Bike magazine the Avons get rated pretty well but so do the Pirellis. On ebay they are the same price.

4*
Bridgestone BT023
Dunlop Roadsmart
Dunlop Roadsmart II
Michelin Pilot Road III

3*
Pirelli Angel ST
Avon Storm 2 Ultra
Continental Road Attack 2
Metzeler Roadtec Z8
Michel Pilot Road II

We'll see how the quotes come out and if the Pilot 1s are still much cheaper I may grab a set of those.

Have you used PR1s then? Didn't rate them too highly?

I have similar usage as you, I have just worn most of the way through a pair of Angel STs.

Really can't fault the performance of them, they work well in the wet and cold, last quite a long time (I should get about 6k before the rear is toast), grip well when it is sunny and being pushed. TBH no complaints other than they are too good (and expensive) for what I do with them as I rarely ride for fun and on a motorway commute they are wasted. Down sides is that the middle of the tyre is treadless so it is hard to tell how much life is left in it and the angel pattern is exceptionally gay, to the point I resented parking in public places and displaying my tarty pile of gayness tyres.

I am going for Pilot Road 1 or Metzeler Z6 roadtecs next as I need money in my pocket more than I need sportier tyres with a gay angel.

I've got a ZZR600 and running Pilot Road 2's (F&R) and have done 9000 miles on them and they still got loads of tread left.

I commute every day (80miles) in all weather. Cant fault them

Thumbs Up

In the words of FWR tyres! - buy the ones you like the tread pattern of!

Personally I've gone for the Roadsmarts on my 6R and Fireblade. No other tyre has been on my rims other than roadsmarts since 2008!

I had avon azaros fitted to the blade when I first got it... and quickly got rid of it!

Personaly love the BT023's.

Highly recommend them and if you read the reviews, I'm not alone.

Great grip in all conditions. Tread looks awsome.

Reasonably priced too.

Roadsmarts (Originals, not tried the IIs yet) were an absolute revelation on my ZZR and suited it perfectly. Pilot Road 3s are my current vice mind you.

They are about the same prince £200 with shipping as the Roadsmart (Is). I will call BLD tomorrow and find out what their prices are. The 023s are sounding like the best for the money based on my ebay research.

I'm about to change the tyres on my Tiger 1050 so I'm looking at pretty much the same selection.

I've narrowed it down to either Michelin PR3 or Angel STs.

I've had PR3s on my Tiger for the last 9k miles. They have been great. The wet grip is brilliant, probably because of the siping (weird extra tread).

Apparently the Angel STs are also good, not as good in the wet but better in the dry, plus cheaper.

But I'm thinking, its Britain, its probably gunna be more wet than dry.

Having read of other Tiger riders experiences with BT023 I was put off as they seem stiffer, producing a harsher ride, and I've not liked Bridgestone in the past.

Only other tyres I've tried were Avon Storm 2 Ultra on my SV. Couldn't fault them at all, even against more expensive rubber.

Had BT023's for the last 1000 miles, can't fault them at all. They are the only brand new tyres I have ever used so can't compare them to much but they transformed the handling of the Hornet (although the old tyres were a bit squared)

Not for any great distance, but 50miles was enough for me to decide i didnt like them in the wet!! Just werent that confidence inspiring, didnt feel like i could push them as much as the PR2's on my bike.

Having said that, this was riding a friends bike ( aprilia Falco ) and different tyres can suit different bikes differently! But on this occasion, his opinion was the same as mine, and soon after he fitted PR2's which he has been perfectly happy with since.

Depends on the tyre, I went from 020s to roadsmart 1s on both the ZZR and Futura, in both cases the roadsmarts really stood out in the wet.

One of the big race schools use BT023s as a wet tyre, CSS I think? As long as you're prepared to pay the premium I don't think you'll be disappointed with either Thumbs Up

I meant PR3 over Roadsmart. I'm trying to stop my penny pinching side win out over my wanting the best possible for my bike side...
