Has anybody got one and used one?

Alledgedly you can stuff the fuel pan with twigs, dry grass and pine cones and almost anything that burns......

So should this not be superior to a camping stove which requires fuel? Or is dry combustible material somewhat harder to find than the advertising blurbs indicate?

They work really well.

However, they are quite bulky and fairly easily dented so not ideal for motorcycle touring. You can also only really use them to boil water. You can't cook in/on them.

There is this another device which allows you to cook almost anything using items such as "twigs, dry grass and pine cones and almost anything that burns.". I often use my one when I'm off camping.

Here is a picture of it:

That said, I do also like my petrol stove and if I'm on the bike, I usually have petrol unless things have not gone according to plan.

If you're into lightweight, have a look into the variety of meths stoves you can get made out of old drinks cans. My favourite is the "penny stove". A penny stove plus enough meths to last a week weighs less and takes up less space than a kelly kettle.

Thanks.

I happen to have a primus multifuel stove (red bottle expedition) it doesn't take my much space, but its a pain as you need to set it on fire for a minute to prime the darned thing. And the small fuel bottle isn't exactly easy to fill with petrol.

Looks like I'm sticking with it then. Thumbs Up

You can get pot supports for the top to enable cooking, but that's even more kit you have to carry around with you :-

If you want to burn twigs/cones without having a larger fire, go for a hobo stove.

I have been using one of these for camping for over 30 years.

https://www.alloutdoor.co.uk/stoves-cooking/stove-units-accessories/esbit/esbit-pocket-stove-incl-20x4g-solid-fuel-tablets-00209000.htm

2 tablets will boil a mess tin full of water, heat a tin of beans or soup
and folds up about twice the size of a fag box.

I should point out that I own what is categorically the coolest (and one of the scariest) camping stove(s) in the world.

It weighs 240g, runs on unleaded petrol and will achieve a rolling boil every time it's asked to. It was made in Swizerland and has only one moving part.

You also can't buy one any more.
