I'm heading down to london for a few days next month. last time I went we paid a fortune in Tube prices. Just paying for each one when we used it. Up here in the north we can get an all day pass for next to nothing you just ride about all day.

Can you get anything like that for London. I've seen the oyster cards but they are just a pre-paid mess. I just want to pay like £10 a day to travel to my hearts content. Any ideas??

You need a travelcard you do. You have to specify which zones you want it to cover but it last all day.

Right thats that bit sorted cheers!!

Been a few times to London and don't really want to do the usual stuff. Seen the London eye, London Tombs, Ripleys believe it or not. The normal stuff. Any tips on where to go this time?? Some little hidden gems. Like obscure condom musuems shooved down a side alley in the middle of no where. That kind of stuff lol.

If you're there at least 3 days, then the london card/pass thing is a good deal - provided you hit the expensive stuff like war rooms, tower, london zoo you easily get your moneys worth, and then the little stuff (transport museum, apsley house, wellington arch, belfast) are essentially free bonuses. You will wait about an hour to get it though, so need to get it day before you start using, and 2 days is much better value. Bloody knackering to get it all in, but worthwhile.

Get an oyster card for travel, put on 2 day pass' worth then shop it in and get your deposit back at euston/kx before you come back.

oyster card is pretty good....dead simple for buses and trains just scan and go..top up at any tube ticket machine as required

(travelcard..mmhh not too sure if its much cheaper, tbh.)

so a few ideas...depending whose in your traveling group

checking out a riverboat, but maybe use....
the Duck instead..it gets a few points for different way of doing the thames.

grab a boris bike and have a wander around Hyde park / kensington gardens..bang next to each other.

i recommend speakers corner for a visit if at the weekend (oxford street corner of hyde park ) lots of nutters about... Laughing
....afterwards dump the bikes and hit kensington high street for a bit of retail,
if traveling with the missus, to keep her happy

OR if hungry and you fancy something a bit more exotic then the usual McD's, edgeware road is just north of speakers corner, and has a plethora of middle eastern restaurants to quench your appetite.
But if your a bit more adventurous, a little further up is church street market (just past marylebone flyover) the missus recommends the mandalay gets a good review from her and time out...she says cheap as well....fish soup & special noodles pretty good spring rolls best ever, so says she.

OR maybe spend a day wandering around town, swmbo reckons lincolns inn and inner temple if you fancy a quiet walk and look at what she calls hidden London.....not far from the British museum if you like that ( but i do reckon the South kensington natural history and science museums are much more interesting.

And if museums are on the menu..the Imperial war museum in greenwich is worth a visit

For a cheap meal for two, don't forget we have chinatown..
taken a few friends from out of town to the Wong Kei
and they loved the food, surly service sometimes..(well, not too bad nowadays) and the price was perfect... Laughing

Pretty cheap and the food is pretty good as well.
not much thats not nice tbf, but we personally recommend the Duck noodle soup..big old bowl stuffed with noodles and roasted duck about £4..and chilli salt and pepper spare ribs...£3....
BIG restaurant (4-5 floors) and you might still have to queue..
sharing a table is the norm.

before or after i could recommend the De Heims dutch bar just a block away..nice beers ..blonds, strawberry, cherry flavours..not too expensive, but this is london.

We are up that way usually once a month,
a quick wander around covent garden looking at the acts,
then into de heims for a beer or two
and then onto the wong kei..

covent garden free...
beers about £8 for two drinks
and the food about £20-£23.... Thumbs Up

If you want quirky little museums and model railways and bottlecap collections then go to Totnes or Llangollen or somewhere.

You're in London. Go on the wheel, go to the Tate Modern, spend all your money at Namco Station, drink in the Porterhouse, shop in Harrods, go on the wheel again, have your photo taken in Trafalgar Square at such an angle that it looks like Nelson is standing on your head, go to a "private shop" in Soho and amuse yourself that everything you find in there is tamer than the results of a Google image search for the phrase "tea bag", go on the wheel again, do a rib ride on the Thames, you get the idea.

Tate Modern is ok but try the Saatchi Gallery off Sloane Square.
Magical building and great collection of art, my favourite piece is "20-50" in the basement.

Yeah, I mean, the fact you can TYPE must mean you're not a smoggy.

I like just wandering about in London, chilling out in the many little squares they have, taking in the hustle and bustle without actully being involved.

I particularly like the South Bank, just down from the Tate modern - with the hard, brutalist architecture of the National Theatre, and the crazy graffitied skaters den, wander along there to the Tate Modern, don't have to go in, then over the Millenium Bridge to get an awesome view of St. Pauls.

It's probably my most favourite city to walk about - there are so many little gems in there, hidden away, you can feel you are a million miles away from what 'London' is supposed to be like, like you've found your own little secret bit. Last time I was there I just happened into a small courtyard of a church, with a little graveyard, slap bang in the heart of it, there were a couple of other people having their lunch, but it was so quiet and serene, with just the faint noise of the traffic seeping through the narrow alleyway.

Plus it's flat Very Happy

Best bit is knowing that you don't live there and all that interest would be lost on you. That you can get a glimpse and fuck off back to a place where it is much nicer to live!

I do apologise for the terrible insult - as I said, I'm not entirely sure where I got the idea from.

I shall now treat you not as a Smoggy, but as a typical Mackem plastic Geordie wannabe.
