Have been looking for a little while now for a new job in, obviously, biking.
After ages of searching and phone calls etc. nothing seems to be available!
As well as that It's unlikely I'll be able to go back to college and re-study because I've already achieved the highest level colleges offer, Just in what is atm, the wrong field: public services!
Anyone have any idea on good ways into the bike industry? Or know of anyone in the HAMPSHIRE area who wants an assistant Very Happy?
Thanks
Mike

My course was a full week course which was a National Diploma BTEC thingy, equivalent to 3 A-Levels.
I wouldn't have had any time to do another course, and now I have that course ^ and because it is the highest level and type of course college offers, they are being fuc*ers about taking me back, even a completely different college.

Let me get this straight correct me if I'm wrong you have a bike and you want to do an apprenticeship at college but none of the local colleges will accept you Question

IF that is the case then you have a BIKE find a college further afield and go there apply get in they can't stop you and just commute to the college. They shouldn't be able to stop you applying to the college because you have one A level equivalence.

Yeah, thats it, but the college location is not an issue, well it is to a level, because I live on my own, so funding is an issue, especially regarding college rather than apprenticeships.
The reason they won't accept, or would be difficult is because colleges are trying to further advance your education. When you have completed a highest level course with high grades, they cannot further your education, which is why generally they want you to go to Uni and/or work. So taking someone back on without actually furthering them, to them seems pointless (its stupid, especially if you want to do a different subject)
It came up before I left in tutor, and this was the explanation that was given, and was proven when i rang colleges today to ask, and this was basically the response I got

You will have to do work experience with a relevant company if you want any chance of getting an apprenticeship.

Employers will be more likely to offer you a job if you're willing to prove yourself by working for nothing.

I know it might not sound ideal, but in today's job market you need to stand out from the crowd. Voluntary/unpaid work is one of those things that employers like to see on a candidates CV.

Some people are so desperate for a job, they're actually paying the employers for work experience, Shocked just so they can obtain a slightly more attractive CV.

I'm perfectly willing, and I have done plenty before. however I've just been repeatedly turned down!
I've tried to mention the fact that i'm building up an SV streetfighter (from the ground up) and always do all my maintenance blah, but no paperwork-no job.
The only thing I'd ask if it was away from home was for perhaps some fuel, because I live on my own, am 19 and work part time to pay my way, so spunking fuel money is difficult.
They all want qualifications nowadays, and I'm trying to get one, but even that seems hard!
Hopefully with patience some luck might appear.. fingers crossed

University?

Engineering?

I believe most bar the likes of OxBridge accept BTEC qualifications.

I was in the civil service and hated it!! So went back to college and now doing Mechanical Engineering degree.
An Engineering degree offers a stupid amount of doors not only in this country but worldwide.

You want to get into Motorcycles?? Triumph have a Graduate Scheme Very Happy
Design and Engineer the latest Triumphs and they do Bike Purchase Scheme. So you could pretty much have a brand new bike every year.

That triumph thing looks amazing, i've had a look at them before and it definately would be something worth getting into. I've always been skeptical of uni for some reason, never really appealed to me. Might have to take it into consideration though, although, I'd like to get some lower level qualification before jumping straight into degree stuff!

It might be worth your while going to an open day at a Uni near you. It will give you an overview of whats involved.

I know i'm biased, but an Engineering degree is a pretty good thing to aspire to. If you want any info or insight just give me a shout. It's not all lectures, there are practical stuff too.
For instance today i've been in a workshop learning how to weld using Gas, Arc, Mig and oxy-acetylene cutting. Quite brief but really useful.

How about Technician? Ring around some Engineering firms (even the big ones like Rolls Royce etc etc) and ask how you would go about becoming one. It's not going to be bike related but still a decent hands on job.

Sounds really interesting, my main concern is the massive debt -.-, and with the amount of people with degree's that never get used.
The only Uni's that would really be practical to me would be portsmouth/southampton and possibly guildford.
Technician work sounds fantastic, like you say, anything engineering based would be perfect. I'd just love to get my hands on with stuff and start learning. Its just seeming difficult to get back to that again!
Should really apply to a couple of apprenticeships from the website, I check it every damn day!

Yep the debt thing isn't great. Most Uni's are offering many various funding help to cover tuition fees. Also decent bursaries and scholarship programmes.
Engineering graduates are very sought after, you will have absolutely no trouble finding a job straight away. I'm at Newcastle and last years grads, the ones with decent marks had about 2-3 job offers each waiting for them when they finished.
For instance, we had an e-mail forwarded on to us from Caterpillar looking for Engineering Graduates. As there is such a shortfall of engineers, the companies go to the Uni's offering graduate jobs.

Southampton is highly regarded and in a majority of eyes, the top Uni for Mechanical Engineering, really really good uni Thumbs Up

I did a 2 year course at college, with a national Diploma (BTEC) level 3 in public services; which is equivalent to 3 A-levels, because I'd like to be a police motorcyclist (abuse what you will, but i wanted to be a pilot before I started college, hence my course choice). This then makes me less favourable to college again (ANY college) because the idea is to further my education, and once I've done the highest level course, I can't be furthered' by college, and should ideally move on to Uni, in a relevant course to what I did at college, but i'd prefer to go and do mechanical stuff at college. If i'd done a level 1/2 course I'd be fine to do a level 3, but its unlikely because the best they can do is equal.

I don't want to do military any more really, just feelings and circumstances changed, and the Police are recruiting, so I'd like to re-educate and do mechanics, seeing as I'm building a bike and look after my every day bike mostly myself but with my Dad too, I wouldn't mind a job in it, I really enjoy it. I just need a qualification for anyone to take me on, seeing as the peice of paper is what's important

In reality, the debt is piss-all. You pay back such a small percentage of your salary (9% of everything over £21k) that it's not the biggest issue. If you come out and land a job at 30k that's only £65 a month. If you decide to do a lesser paid job (say only £25,000) then payments shrink even further £30 a month. Interest on it is tiny too (capped at a maximum of 3% if you earn £40k+).

Basically, you'll earn more thanks to your degree than you'll pay back plus with a wider range of jobs you'll probably be more likely to enjoy your work on top of it.

In reality the debt is substantial. While you may have small repayments you are now tied to the system.

University used to be free when less people had degrees, now it costs more and is devalued...

Worth it if you have specific career goals that will NEED a degree in a given field. Not worth it to do a general humanities/english degree and to 'find yourself' Razz

I remember Merton college(south london) did a reasonably respected motorcycle mechanics course, probably highly subsided if you are 19 or under...

true that! I have got other mechanics on my list, its just that primarily I'd like to do bikes, failing that then i'll look at cars and other engines, seeing as it's the principle which is just as fascinating. IMO.
I always look every day on the website, its just waiting for the right thing to come up. If something comes up which takes my fancy, in any mechanical vehicle, then i'll take it. I'm not strictly limiting myself to bikes, that's just my preference
