Hooning down some B road between the A34 from Stafford and Penkridge two up with Jazza, we clear a corner at about 50 and see two pheasants plodding across the road.

Not particularly keen on having to spend an hour or more of my Sat night cleaning baked bird-guts out of the engine cooling fins, I took evasive action - stand up the bike and close the throttle.

Bugger me if one of the little fuckers didn't fly up, roll up its feathers and head towards me with the "Are you looking at my bird?" look in its beady littly eye.

Ten out of ten for bravery, nil out of ten for target identification.

The stroppy little sod flew smack onto the L/H wing mirror arm, bending it back an inch or so before fluttering into the hedge.

I'm not proud to admit I ducked as it flew up leaving Jazza to take one for the good guys, but I am happy that neither of us got a visor full of pissed-off pheasant.

Which was nice. Mr. Green

Suicidal psychopaths those things. Is the mirror broken, or did it just go back on the spring?

Sounds like a bad weekend for wildlife. I attended an road traffic accident last night, a woman in a fiat punto collided with a deer.

The roads got a national speed limit and needless to say, the car's a write off as was the deer. Sad She was really shaken up as she'd hit it virtually right in front of her.

They really should be shooting more of those things imo, I've had a good few near misses.

Glad to hear the Pheasant was the only casualty.

Thats the problem Dom, they breed the things to hunt, and they cant kill them as quick as they breed them, and the population explodes.

The mirror survived undamaged - the bird hit the metal arm between the bars and mirror. It knocked the whole thing back a couple of inches though...

Serious question, had you killed the lil fella, would it have been illegal to take your roadkill home?

You've been working in Redditch too long, pal. I know it's customary round there, but eating roadkill is generally frowned upon in more civilised areas...

Illegal for you to take it home but the next person along can I believe.

Or something daft like that.

If you go down the road a bit, turn around and then pick it up you are the next person to come along. Very Happy

Had a few rabbits like that, and a couple of pheasant. A lot easier now cos I have a lurcher.

I hit a grey squirrel in the car this morning, but then again I just hate those little grey b4rst4rds. Twisted Evil

Glad nobody was hurt apart from the wildlife though.

Why else take it home? Decoration? Something for the kids to play with?

You pay good money for pheasant, so I just wondered, if it had been killed outright by the blow why not take it home.

Oh well.

Really? I'd have thought they might just breed less of the things and then wipe the lot out before the next year. Not a subject I'm too knowledgeable on that's for sure.

Well, maybe I didnt explain is properly.

They breed the Pheasants, but they do not do selective breeding (all femals for instance).
That means that they have males and females flying around.
It only takes 2 of them to lay eggs, and the population is increased.

Pheasant and rabbit with lead shot in isn't so nice, especially as they're stressed out when they're killed. Smack one with the car, no lead shot and a nice one for the pot. I remember butchering a bambi one of my dad's mates hit with his car. Tasty bugger too. Thumbs Up
