First of all, how could you not notice that the V5 didn't come through the post.

Second, when you bought the bike you should have filled the relevant sections on the V5 in with your details, then tore half of it off and kept it yourself. Now I don't know what you'd do but I assume if you kept that half (which you should) then you should be able to prove that you are the registered keeper to the DVLA if the previous owner never sent his half to them.

Phone the DVLA. Tell them the reg No. and they will confirm if you are the registered keeper.

Do you still have the new keeper supplement?

1) Throw yourself on the DVLA's mercy and prepare for a reaming of Biblical proportions.

2) Try to sell the bike to someone with the same priorities as you.

If you're not the registered keeper, you're probably also uninsured.

You should definitely check with the next Police Officer you come across.

Maybe you weren't fucking speeding then..... Rolling Eyes

But since you have now settled the stuff with DVLA. (I bet they must have been sat waiting for you call.) you will be able to do the jail time for ALL those speeding convictions now Backdated.

No need to be prima donnas this is really not a big deal and ultimately the only way around it I know is the following.

Fill out a V62 form.

Under the section "Why don’t you have a V5C?" tick the box "I bought the vehicle from the previous keeper or motor trader and I have not received a V5C yet."

...enclose a cheque for £25 to the DVLA.

If you have the V5C/2 section you should have got at the sale you can enclose this and not pay the fee.

Send it to the DVLA recorded (always send recorded to them they are incompetent).

If the seller did not send the V5C originally you will have to wait around 6 weeks as they will try and contact the previous owner if he doesn't reply (usually the case) then they send you the V5C.

No drama. I understand this is what they told you to do over the phone?

The poster has a penchant for the dramatic, we're just giving him what he's used to.

No need to pay if, as the op, you have the new keeper supplement.

Call up the DVLA (use that say no to 0870 website or whatever it's called) and say that you haven't received your V5, give them your address and they will either confirm you are the registered owner or tell you it is still registered to the previous owner.

You could leave yourself open to the old "you should have known and you should have told us therefore we will see you in court" chestnut but at present that has been proved to be a waste of time and unenforceable.

Even the DVLA only claim that there's a duty on the old keeper to inform them, not the new one.

Being the registered keeper is a burden, not an asset - I'm perennially tempted to give the details of my local MP or Chief Constable to sellers. Wink

"the overall person in charge of the DVLA"

Now you're taking the pish...

They will be unable to confirm that.
