Hi There,

Going to keep the story short.

I have a cg 125, payed insurance in full, cant cancel it. It will expire in june.

Now, Ive found a nice gs500, 2001 with 12k on the clock for £750. this guy seems real nice aswell.

I was planning on getting the gs500 in the shed and licking it clean till june, then having it insured.(Approx £550)

I have the money, but im a student. my lunch/dinner will change from £4 meals everyday at the takeaway to ...bread + water!

What do you suggest?

Bread and water? Pushing the boat out there aren't you!

For cheaper living try potatoes you can get 25 kilo bags for £8, while £1.25 buys you 400 grams.

Granted bread and carbs tend to ruin your gut. Even porridge is good.

Most insurance companies will let you change the vehicle at very little cost (other than difference in premium...) sell the cg and do this. Job done.

£4 meals everyday?

Dude, learn to cook!

And coming from me that means fcuk all! All I can cook is bacon and egg sandwhich, pasta and now pork chops.

But even with that bunch, I made a promise to myself to stop cooking ready meals like I did last year, this year I'm all about the cooking the food myself.

Save yourself a bunch.

Have you got a license yet? If not, forget the bike and get passing.

Some. Some underwriters only cover peds and 125s and won't cover a larger bike on the same policy.

Personally I wouldn't buy it in anticipation, all you're doing is tormenting yourself by having a depreciating asset sitting around rusting.

Just remember that whilst your waiting for June to come and you`re licking it clean, you may be tempted to take it for a spin.
You KNOW if that happens the police will fall out of the sky in thier eagerness to nick you.

OP has a 125 though, so it is entirely possible that his insurance company will not actually insure him on anything >125cc.

That's the case with me. Found a bike I loved. I could afford it. Seriously wanted to buy it. On the phone to the insurance company (and it went something like this):
Them: "oh, sorry, we can't insure you on that bike. The cheapest quote we can get you is £9000."
Me: "What? But I got a quote online for £400 with a different company, why do you charge so much?"
Them: "The underwriter on your policy specialises in insuring 50cc and 125cc bikes. That quote was changing you to a different underwriter."
Me: "So what would happen if I cancelled my policy, could I still get my 1 year NCB?"
Them: "You could cancel now but you won't get your 1 year NCB unless you let your policy run out."
Me: "Ah right, because I need my NCB because without it my quote goes up £200."
Them: "I think the best thing you can do then is just wait for your policy to run out then and then buy that quote you found online."

I was (am) in the same situation as the OP. I decided not to buy the bike though purely due to the fact it would be sitting uninsured against fire&theft until April. Evil or Very Mad

Rogerborg; yep..passed back in October.. thats true, I have convinced myself that I can wait till june then have it insured, but I know thats not true.

I am on one of those stupid 125 policies, So i would need to take out a whole new policy.

Pepperami; thats what im worried about. thats why you guys are suppose to tell me to wait it out!

Jordan, same boat..except I probably wont get my ncb Sad

I think I should wait it out..but damn I cant control the urge.

ebay/gumtree all day everyday, 'gs500' top search.

I will wait it out
I will wait it out
I will wait it out
I will wait it out
I will wait it out

Will find your insurers wont swap you from a 125 to a 500.

You'll have to cancel and start a new policy.

Please do it so you stop posting about GS500s... Rolling Eyes I've seen a fair few bikes that are better for far less than some GS500s

I can't help it. I have to post about them.

What other bikes o.O?

Initially, I was going to get a sv650, then a bros, now a gs500.

Nothing beats the gs500 imo...

Group 7 insurance, 47bhp.

Ignore the insurance groups. It costs £100 more to insure a litre twin than it does a 500cc. Groups are like 7 and 15.

Do many quotes.

CB400SF is better than a GS500 in every way.
CB500 > GS500.

Do some really good looking at some bikes on ebay in your price range...Some bikes are really cheap to insure.

If you're lucky enough to be with Swinton and underwritten by Aviva then you'll be able to change your policy up from a 125 to a motorbike Thumbs Up

When I was a student; at some point in the first term of freshers year, ABOUT when the grant cheque's started running out; I sat and chomped my way through a stake & chip dinner, with a bottle of plonk to wash it down... eventually a salivating, baked-bean inflicted house-mate asked my HOW the heck I could afford stake & chips & a bottle of wine.... I pointed out that the bottle of wine was cheaper at Kwik-Save than the pint he had at lunch-time in the SU bar, the stake, less than the Card-Board burger he had from the refectory....
The other then asked me to teach him to cook... I agreed, the conversation went like this:
"So what do you want to cook?"
"Chips"
"OK, go get a potatoe out of the cupboard"
"Why?"
"To make chips"
"Why?"
Becouse you peel it, chop it into chip shapes, and fry it!"
"What? A potatoe?!"
"Yes, a potatoe!"
"So chips are made from a potatoe!?"
"err..... YES!"
"Well bugger me; here's me doing a degree, and I NEVER knew THAT! I thought they came in a bag out the freezer!"

OP:- Short term 'Monthly' policy till your CG insurance expires?

And lots of Dahl!....

Now THERE'S an idea.... HOW ABOUT, making some 'Thunder-Pants'... polythene underwear..... and using Dahl induced emmissions as a fuel for the bike!

Save; more you eat; more you save on petrol!

I used to have a SuperFour, very easy to ride - if I could ride it anyone can.

The silencer on this one looks poo.

The yellow one looks promising with a £200 start. It's a bit rough and I reckon it needs new rear shocks but it could be a cheap bargain find.

Street-fightered scruff-bag but if it goes for around £500 you can't complain, it's a runner MOT'd until September.

GPZ500S > CB500, if we're talking value for money.

And yes, i also agree with:
CB500 > GS500.
