Cheaper to just buy a satnav.

Edit: I take that back. Bike satnavs are several times the price of car ones.

Hi

There are GPS units designed for performance testing which are accurate.

A basic GPS unit has a fair margin for error under certain circumstances. With those ones (interesting anyway) they are not giving you the refresh frequency (most GPS units are only 1Hz, so a large margin for error) or any details of how the speed is calculated (ie, basic unit will just measure the distance between the last 2 position fixes and calculate speed from that which won't be accurate).

And any GPS unit is useless for checking your speed in a tunnel Laughing .

All the best

Keith

You can get apps for phones that do this.....

About as accurate as a bag of spanners..... Sometimes you can be doing 0 mph and moving nicely, other times they show 30 and you are stood still.....

If you've got an electronic speedo, get a speedohealer.

Put the satnav on the bike, note the difference between speedo and satnav, then input the correction factor into the speedohealer.

I needed do this when I changed sprocket sizes.

FYI Bike satnavs are made more robust than car satnavs to be waterproof and shock proof That is why there are twice the price. (And bikers are wankers so pay the extra without batting an eyelid.)
Some folk on here swear by the iPod as a satnav.
The screens are too small you risk water/impact damage.

Is there a device you can buy that uses GPS to give your exact speed on the bike or in the car.
I saw something like this being used on top gear but I can't find out what it was.
I know Sat Navs already come with this feature but I don't need to buy one of those.
Any idea's.

There's no need to buy anything!

There speaks someone who has never had a bike whose speedo fancied itself as a comedian.

I prescribe a few weeks on an RS125 Razz .

Mine digital speedo has packed in.
I have no readout at all.
Nothing.
It can't be repaired,
I've been quoted £600 for a new speedo unit + the cost of a programmed key.
So I'm looking for a cheaper option as a temporary measure.
If you make assumptions without first obtaining the facts, then all you succeed in doing is making yourself look not too bright.

I'm sorry Jim I assumed you were one of these 'standard speedo's aren't accurate enough' bolleaux peddlers who insist the only accurate way to get your speed was with gps or such devices.

Surely a device designed and intended purely to read speed is the better option!?

Personally I find the speed reading on my Tomtom comes in handy when the drive has packed in on my divvy, though I just make a habit of memorising the speed vis a vis rpm in top gear usually and that's enough.

Can't you get one on ebay btw?

Why sorry ????? Laughing

OP never mention the reason for a replacement.... Embarassed

Like you added at end, ebay or bike breakers. There was a site that allowed you to enter what you were looking for and it would then go out to loads of co's who would respond if they had what you required.

Like one of these:

https://partfinderuk.co.uk/

https://www.gissit.com/

I've had luck with these before, probably worth enquiring with them about a secondhand unit.

I find on my divvy its pretty simple knowing your speed without the clock working - 2k in top is 30mph, around 3k for 40, 5k for 70mph etc.

The speedo drive seems to have a quite finite life span.

You don't have to have the factory one, but you must have a working speedo fitted by law.

Strictly speaking slightly more complex than that. Must show mph AND kmh (or be switchable between them). Eu rules require a KMH speedo which may show MPH, while the UK requires an MPH speedo. That said there are official UK imports that don't comply with this, let alone loads of grey imports.

Although you will probably need to really wind up the police before any would go to that extent to make life difficult for you.

All the best

Hi

Out of interest, who have you asked about repairing it?

All the best

Hi

Dealers don't surprise me, although if plastic welded together it might be a pig to get into (and a pig to seal afterwards). However might be worth having a hunt round for speedo repair specialists.

All the best
