Hello,

Just two questions. I have some rust underneath of the exhaust, And quite a large patch on the Bracket. Just wondering the best method to remove this? Or just make it not as bad.

Also the stand has the paint flaking of quite bad. Just wondering, Would it work if I was to get all the old paint off, And Then paint it with Hammerite?

Thanks! Smile

To do it properly, take the exhaust off.

If the rust is really bad, start with a wire brush, then use emery paper; start with a course emery to remove the worst of the rust and then use finer emery to buff it to a near-polish finish. Do the same with the stand.

Couldn't hurt. Be sure to get all the rust off first though. Personally I use "kurust" to harden up corroded areas, although doubtless someone will advise the opposite. Wink

Don't paint any parts of the exhaust (or anything else that gets hot) with hammering. It's not heat resistant.

I beg to differ. It may not SAY that its heat resistant but I've painted a couple of car engine blocks with it and I've never had any problems.

Not that id paint an exhaust with it mind, you need VHT or UHT paint for that.

Obviously that was supposed to say hammerite. Stupid iSpell Laughing

To be honest, I've never done it myself but have heard that it makes a pretty foul smell as it burns off...

I really can't believe nobody's mentioned "JML Doctor Power".

Every biker should have a pot in their garage.

It is a water based cream cleaner and polish that simply eats rust.

I've demonstrated it to friends who thought that their chrome was irredeemable. I rubbed some Dr power on with the supplied pad and buffed off with a soft cloth. The chrome was 90% viable afterwards.

Please try this before attacking your bike with emery cloth.

IIRC it's fine upto about 200°C engine blocks, cylinders and heads don't get that hot so no problems there (no more than about 120 for a water cooled head), exhausts take mere seconds to get that hot near the head so it's not so good for that.
