I can see he was a potential terrorist, but he hadn't actually done anything, only looked it up.

Thought crime.

Am I the only one to have read jolly rogers cook book, which had all sorts of similar stuff ?

Admittedly, I didnt then write letters to people claiming to want to be a martyr, but a friend of mine did claim that he had made some of these bomb recipes, including the one where you make crystals from bleach.

For all the vast intelligence resources put into finding these clowns, it's their own utter lack of it that seems to get them caught more often than not.

SMASH THE SATANIC INFIDEL STATE! Oh noes, I've been burgled! Help me, satanic infidels! I'll smash you after you get my telly back. Doh!

The sentences in these cases do puzzle me though. If he isn't going to act on it, then all we're doing by locking him up is to encourage him to do so. If he is going to act on it, giving him a free base jump down a disused mineshaft would seem to be the appropriate response.

Actually I think it's more the case that the burglar handed in the memory stick to the police, which to me suggests an illegal search rather than a public spirited burglar, but then I am a bit cynical like that. I'm sure you do get public spirited burglars.

I read it too, and when I was a lad (oh god that makes me feel old) we used to make some of the stuff in it too. 90% of the stuff never actually worked but once it did, the thermite stuff...... oh man how silly we were as children to pour water on it to try and put it out. Embarassed

I hear that now, ferrous oxide powder is a controlled substance, which I believe was one of the ingredients for home made thermite. You could probably get a brillo pad to rust pretty quickly though if left damp. I wouldnt fancy scraping bits of rusty metal to try to collect some.

I am really struggling to understand, from the BBC site, what he has done that justifies the time? He read some stuff and wrote a few notes. He wasn't a member of any organistaion and he didn't physically do anything. How does that work?

Damn it I have made myself known. I should never have download that stupid anarchy cookbook 15 years ago. Fortunately I have several shotguns and ammunition (certified) to at least take out a couple of 'them'.

Off topic and all but on my journey from one end of the country to the other I have heard of a footballer receiving a threatening letter. This letter contained, and I quote, "A bullet", "a shotgun cartridge", "a bullet shaped object". So which is it and why has it taken so long to identify it? The media should die.

Why would a burglar want to give the cops CCTV footage of them doing the break-in? That would make him even more stupid than the first guy.

Thought crime. Your freedom to think what you like may be revoked at any time.

"The Human Rights Committee states that this, "distinguishes the freedom of thought, conscience, religion or belief from the freedom to manifest religion or belief. It does not permit any limitations whatsoever on the freedom of thought and conscience or on the freedom to have or adopt a religion or belief of one's choice. These freedoms are protected unconditionally."[2] Similarly, Article 19 of the UDHR guarantees that "Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference...""

But if your thoughts include notions that its wrong to invade other countries, and something must be done about it, that would constitute thought crime as it may lead to you doing something about it. (Most people never get beyond the thought crime to actually do anything.)

Its kind of ironic, that when evil regimes were doing whatever they could to control attempts to overthrow their country by various terrorist groups, we saw any restriction on their people as wrong, but we are quite happy to do it ourselves when we feel we are under threat.

Imprisonment without trial anyone ?
Rendition to perform torture anyone ?
Extrajudicial killings on the grounds that someone is suspected of being a terrorist. etc

I'm not saying the burglar caught the cops on cctv, but that either the burglar was public spirited and was doing a burglary, found the evidence and handed it in, or the burglar is a fictious character invented by the authority that did an illegal search to get the evidence for a legal one.

I've not seen any mention of cctv until you seem to conjure it up from somewhere.

oh right ok, yeah seen it now

ok so my new slant is then, lazy coppers decide to nick him for thought crime rather than trying to find the burglar who did an actual crime.

To be fair finding burglars is hard, so why not nick law abiding citizens, with a vague interest in becoming a martyr.
