in short.. GET ONE!

they're awesome.

just upgraded my pc and im currently running a 120gb 6gb/s SATA3 550mb/s beast. i had a SATA2 230mb/s before that and the difference was insane going from my raid0 setup.

it'll make a huge difference to your pc.

need over want.. dunno but GET ONE! Wink

its funny, my machine takes longer to post than it does to get into windows. we're talking like 4-5 seconds from windows logo to being able to login

your board supports 6Gbps/SATA3 too so get the beasty one. went kingston hyperx myself. 555mb/s read 510mb/s write. shame your other drives arent up to it.

It's a good idea but i wouldn't get that drive. Check out some of the views and you'll see that the advertised speed is only true for a brand new blank drive. As soon as you stick an OS on it the advertised speeds are meaningless.

https://www.tomshardware.com/charts/ssd-charts-2011/AS-SSD-Sequential-Read,2782.html

That drive you mentioned gets a real world 267.5MB/S sequential read speed for example. Quite a bit down on the claimed 555MB/s less than half in fact. All the claims are unrealistic but some worse than others.

I was disappointed with my SSD. Massive FAIL. Broke within a week. Thankfully Amazon are ace with returns.

If you upgrade, make sure you have a good backup. But, mind you, with this sort of rig you should be aware of all this Smile

same with monitors when they all started going on about 8ms, 6ms, 4ms.. in reality it wasnt anywhere near that in actual use.

nevertheless, higher spec is higher spec. you cant say 'get the 200 one as the 500 one is only that fast anyway as the 200 one will suffer from the same degradation as well.

/edit

besides, my kingston hyperx seems to perform damn well according to that chart in the link you posted Wink

SSD = Pure win, you will not believe how much of a difference it makes. Remember the day you went from 56k to broadband? It's a bit like that Cool

OCZ do an SSD tool that lets you analyse the drive, had a little look at it last week and still got 100% life left in it after a year of use. Also handy for upgrading the firmware on it if you haven't done it.

Does their tool work with non-OCZ drives? And if yes, got a link?

I bought a 64gb SSD recently and the start up times for windows 7 are noticeably faster.

I went with a mid range one I found through a Toms Hardware review:

https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/buy-ssd-recommendation-value,3088-6.html

So far it has been a great performance boost for day to day stuff.

Yes higher spec is higher spec, but higher claimed spec isn't always higher actual spec. The Crucial C300 claims 355mb/s and delivers 350mb/s. So even though on claimed spec it's 200mb/s slower in the real world it's nearly 100mb/s faster. Thats the sort of difference i'd be paying attention to when buying a drive, not the advertised spec.

Depends on the amount of apps you need to use on the main OS drive. I have quite a few I use on a daily basis and the 64GB would have been too small. If you don't need loads of apps, 64GB is cost effective.

Granted, the verdict is still "SSDs are so scorching hot that I'm willing to put up with their craziness.", but don't say you weren't warned.

Cheers Jay. Smile

The status of the solid state disk is PERFECT. Problematic or weak sectors were not found.
The TRIM feature of the SSD is supported and enabled for optimal performance.
The health is determined by SSD specific S.M.A.R.T. attribute(s): #231 SSD Life Left

As long as you have a drive with decent reliable controller (OCZ agility's are notoriously unreliable, AVOID) and TRIM enabled in Windows 7, you'll be alright.

The Corsair M4's scream as the best all rounders in speed and reliability from what I've seen. Have a look at the OCUK forums Cansa, they've just released a overall review of it and the M4 comes out on top a lot. I'd link but I can't seem to be able to get on it atm, it's under the storage drives section.

OCUK has them on offer a lot too, always good saving a few quid Thumbs Up

Cheers for the info peeps, I check out the review on OCUK Scythe.

No point in buying a 1TB F3 as it wont be any faster than my barracuda that i have at the moment.

Get one! Probably the best upgrade you can do. Stay away from OCZ though, their Vertex 2 drives are honorific and personally I wouldn't trust their other ones either, but that's because of my bad experiences with them. I went through 2 of the bastards before getting a refund, second one lasted less than 2 months as well (OCZ 60GB Vertex 2).

Aye, the chips fail after a while, depending on how heavily you use the drive. Should be years though really, but personally I'd go with a manufacturer that has a few years warranty because of this.

Just ordered a 128GB Crucial m4 for 140 quid, with TCB and Quidco should work out to be about £100.

I wonder if both TCB and Quidco can be claimed......

Your Suggestion - Samsung 1TB F3 SATA II 3.0Gb/s 7200rpm

Am i missing something?

Oh and while I'm at it, stop being a prick.
