Okay, so I gave my bike a good wash earlier, then left it about an hour, oiled up the chain and left to go to my girlfriends house.
At first as I left, the bike was fine - then (as I got to the dual carriageway as luck would have it) it started cutting out, then firing again. Kind of surging along the dual carriageway between about 20-30mph. Not the safest thing to be doing... It also occasionally cut out entirely, and I had to coast to a stop, and start it again at the side of the road - which seemed to work fine once it was there.
I managed to limp to a side street and park up, where I stopped the bike for a moment, caught my breath, and had a check that the oil, petrol and so on were ok.
All those are fine, tried starting it again.. and it was ok. Rode it back home and it seemed fine until just before I reached home it started playing up again.
My suspicion is that some of the water when it was being washed has got into the side-stand switch - so I've given it a bit of a squirt with WD40, and am hoping that if I go catch the bus now, and leave it to dry in the garage, it'll be okay when I try it next.
Does that seem likely? or am I just clutching at straws? ____________________ - CBT: 02/01/11 Theory: 26/04/11 Mod 1: 19/05/11 Mod 2: 19/08/11

It has turned out to be the conection from the coils to the HT leads was lose on one side and renewing that has fixed the issue.
| This.
Also, haven't adjusted anything carb related have you? |
Haven't touched the carbs - literally just hosed it down, gave it a quick sponging with some car shampoo to get the muck off, then rinsed it off. Bike was working perfectly for a trip to exeter and back + daily commuting the week before. Also fitted an alarm the day before that I forgot about when posting here, but didn't bother hooking up the immobiliser or the indicator flasher, just screwed it onto the battery terminals for the siren and movement sensor.
Have also had water having got into the petrol, and loose connection to battery after fiddling with it to attach alarm, suggested.
Am going to have a go at tightening the terminal connections up, and checking the coils, then see if it's solved - if not, will try draining and refreshing the fuel.
Edit:
Have had the tank off, checked the HT leads are firmly clicked down, given the spark plug general area a bit of a clean up and some wd 40 (as there were some dead leaves that had got in there sometime nicely burning up). Also tightened up the battery terminal attachments as I was in there.
In addition though, discovered the breather hose and the overflow hose were kinked up badly under the tank - bad enough that one of them had split through. Have now cut them both off under the worst kinks (directly under attachment), reattached to tank and straightened the other kinks out and put some tape around it to try to prevent any splitting that may have been started (they look a little sketchy, probably need replacing really).
Will post if that sorted it when I get a chance to test ride. I suspect that as the fuel level lowered, vacuum built, water from washing probably helped the cap seal down, and the bike simply couldn't pump enough fuel into the engine.
Edit:
The above did not sort, however after a lot of faffing around trying different things, the air intake was checked, and it turned out that a small piece of paper had slipped down and was just in the right position to be sucked up against it as the bike got moving. ____________________ - CBT: 02/01/11 Theory: 26/04/11 Mod 1: 19/05/11 Mod 2: 19/08/11
