so has any one every tired to put together a review section?.

between the many members on BCF i would have a educated guess that a review of almost every popular bike could be done.

same goes for the "what tyre?" type threads.
a review, or even personal comparison test would be informative for those that are in the market for new rubber and want advice.

the bike review would also be beneficial to the new bikers. as a review done by a magazine on track might not be as relevant to them as a review done by a group of every day average riders of varying skill on the same roads they ride on.

i guess it could be applied to any popular product we as bikers use (oil, brake pads, tools, clothing etc)

just a thought Wink Thumbs Up

Been done and tried many times.

There's an index page at the top of show and tell documenting the decent reviews. Thumbs Up

Write one and PM me with a link and I'll add it, or if I spot it I'll add it.

Because people don't contribute enough.

If people wrote enough reviews and the thread got long enough, then perhaps a section would be added, but most people do a couple then lose interest.

I think it would be a good idea. When searching for reviews you could specify the 'Reviews' forum in the search options cutting out all the other posts mentioning that product/word from the other sections.

And possibly because people didn't read what was already there Wink Razz.

(hint hint Wink Razz Thumbs Up )
like the one G has on the road craft course he took, that was a good, read Thumbs Up

I asked the same question some time ago with similar results, I doubt I would find any reviews without the link from Ham.

I can't see why it matters how many posts were made, it might reduce the number of 'what tyre/helmet/bike/GF?' threads in other areas Laughing

^^ thats what i was thinking.

review wise it also gives you a more relevant alternative to what a bike mag might write.

if your in the market for say a supermoto, and there are owners reviews it might be more helpful then a quick review on mcn by some one that only spent a hour riding it.

i guess it wouldn't even have to be a essay of a piece written by one person, it could be a thread with small reviews by several

To be fair G's written many reviews for this forum already so that's probably a little unfair.

Nothing to stop you doing it yourself...... Wink

Or the two other listed in my profile, also the 'how to wheelie' post, also listed there? Wink

Sadly a lot of the time owner's reviews do tend to be rather biased - for different reasons to why magazine reviews are often biased.

I've said before - if we get a decent community of people regularly writing decent reviews I'll hassle Korn to do something better.
One problem is sorting the wheat from the chaff - see 'Show and Tell' where half the stuff is

I have suggested (and been ignored) before that we have a 'post icon' style thing that could be used to identify the type/reason behind posts so that extra filtering could be used - a 'review' one would then allow you to see 'All Topics' which are reviews.

However, for being selective, I think a single maintained index thread should be perfectly adequate and probably better, as it should be easier to find what you're looking for.

In the end, having an extra section isn't going to help people massively as they're still going to go to General bike chat and ignore the 'read me first' sticky thread there.

What's most needed is for people to actually write reviews, not just ask others to do it Wink.

Forgot about that one G, I've added the Bikesafe one too, and rearranged it so it's easier to find what you're after. Thumbs Up

lol, i didn't mean it in that way.
i meant as a moderator, if others see you doing it, they might follow suit, as you, G, bendy keith etc are well respect members who's opinions are well received.

i wasn't saying your a mod, so you should do it,
sorry if it came across that way Wink .

i see you and hams point, i guess if no one writes reviews there can't be no review section.

i don't know if i'm personally cut out for the bcf journalist job.
but i may have to put my money where my mouth is and take the 1st stab at it at some stage

cheers for the replies to the feedback lads Thumbs Up

I agree, a review section would be good.

I might even write a couple.
As said, i would rather read reviews by BCF members that have actually lived with a product - whether it be a bike, clothing, tyres etc etc.

I dont trust magazine journalists..

Thumbs Up

Because people don't contribute enough.
Contrary to contribution, it's more that there isn't an area to put threads.

I know this area is something you've kept warm on the back-burner to a point, and if you were a mod hassling Korn (I've sent PMs) then maybe the process would be speeded up, but I'd guess he holds communications from either in a similar regard.

People never will because there's no place to actually put them. So we end up with a load staggered in varied forums and none to actually neatly track down. When a newbie joins and looks at what clothing to buy they'd check the 'Show and Tell'/For sale sections, but as it stands they have no direction so post, adding to the clutter.

There is indeed a thread with links, but this to someone new and investigaating the site is clearly overlooked.

A review section is a different ball game to most of what the forum currently offers - so lumping that in with 'the rest' which has no priority means the concept fades away.

I PM'd for both a review and stolen section to be considered, both are the only things this forum is really missing - and it's the largest on the net. If it costs then fine, stick a donations button up near chat and let it be used. Thumbs Up

(as it happens, I was looking for a review and still haven't it, so the problem exists Wink )

And someone new to the forum won't be checking the 'review' section either, they'll be checking General Bike Chat - or Biking News because it's the first one on the list.

A long time ago another member tried to make a BCF articles front end - something akin to what Visordown is now, though for user generated content. We still got very little content submitted if I remember..

Reviews can easily go in General Bike Chat or Show and Tell and plenty do.

Stolen section I would be pretty sure would be ignored apart from by a few regulars and people that have already had their bike stolen.

We have tried other similar sections in the past, but they've not generally been successful - see what a mess Show and Tell generally is for a start.

How strange, I just came here to suggest a reviews section, and the first link I come across is for a review section.

A poll should be made and used to help decide. Power to the people and all that jazz.

I don't agree with the stolen section so much.

A poll won't make people actually write reviews worthy of a review section, however.

If people put more effort in to writing and organising reviews and less time moaning about the lack of a review section, we might actually have one Wink.

+1, but mine's in Show and Tell.

A stolen section here would be a slow mover but guaranteed a help, BCF is the biggest bike forum on the net, even 125ccSB has an active stolen section. I even offered to help mod it, I can't cause any damage in a small minor section. Laughing Laughing

Although I won't write reviews because I know they will be lost in the ether. A specific section may prompt others to write even if it's "I brought a bulb and it was great!". Get Robby to Mod it and a fair amount of crap will never see the light of day.
If your concerned over the level of attention it receives then treat it like the workshop and bump up the Karma, seems to work Wink .

Stick links to such threads in your profile?
A quick note in your signature to advice people.

Post in Big Ham's review thread, or let him know to add your post.
If we start getting lots of reviews added to that, might be more impetuous for a separate area (or just to rename that one Razz).
