My colleague Tom is seriously minted and has just bought a new supercharged Mini Cooper for his Mrs. He is getting rid of her old car and offered it to me at the price a dealer offered at PX, £1500.
Unfortunatly I do not want a 2001 Freelander with 58k on the clock.

When he offered it me I only considered selling it on and making a grand on the deal but it is a cool enough car so I am now thinking about it as a keeper. Any input on the price?

So where are you going with this Wal ?...You advertising it or thinking of buying it but aren't sure ?...

Buy it if you think it's a decent car, do a bit of Googling though as they had problems with the head and gasket I believe, and I can't see how you're ripping off a mate if that's what a garage offered, yeah he may well get more for it in a Private sale but who's buying cars this early in the year and who has spare cash these days...

If you're interested in it then buy it, but do you need it alongside the van ?...

It is petrol but the head has been sorted, they do 30+ to the gallon so that is no worse than the van.
Full (dealer) service record and no bling mods, it is a sorted motor.

At most I estimate £400-£1500 off dependant on condition and fuel type.
I suggest if you are interested take it, if you later decide to sell it split any profit with him.

Least then you can show good faith to him, who thinks he's doing you a favour, which he may be.

Defo get your money back a year on, and experience the motor and whether you like them / it. Idea

How long ago was the head done?

If i recall theres been a few 'updates' to the gasket over the past couple of years. A friend owns a freelander petrol and has been through so many damn head gaskets its untrue. Yet the latest one has been on for just over a year with no issue.

For £1500 id take a punt...

Must say, doesn't seem the cheapest to me, bearing in mind this is 11 years old and the least desirable version of a not very desirable car.

In saying that, it's not mega dear either and the mileage is nice, so it could be worth a go.

Now is a very good time to be selling 4x4s, what with the weather forecast and all, so you could try turning it over and making a buck.

If you do decide to keep it, get familiar with a firm called X Part; they bought up all the old parts stocks when Rover went broke and have developed a final fix for the K series head gasket problem.

Last time I looked, the full kit was about £150, but it does seems to cure the issue, once and for all.

As for ripping a mate off, he offered it to you for that price, once it's yours, you can do what you like with it; if it turns out he sold it too cheap, that's his lookout.
