Having seen the way more and more legislation is being introduced to make it difficult for young riders in the UK, Guernsey's Government (The States) may have to drop the CBT

Quote:
Guernsey motorbike safety course may end, warns minister

If problems with Guernsey's compulsory basic motorcycle training cannot be solved it may have to end, the environment minister has warned.

Currently anyone wanting to book a place faces a four-month wait.

The delay has been caused by the move of the course from Les Beaucamps High School to a smaller area at La Mare de Carteret High School. Deputy Peter Sirett said if a bigger suitable site could not be found they may have to discontinue the course.
He said: "If it reaches the point where people literally are unable to book CBT tests then maybe we've got to look at whether we'll have to carry on with this compulsory basic training.

"From a road safety point of view I'd hate to see that happen because I believe the youngsters who go through CBT are out on to the roads much better prepared than they would be if they hadn't been through the process."

There's too much demand, so they have to cut off the supply?

Yeah, doesn't make much sense does it?

What it could mean is that our 14 year-olds could get a provisional license, buy a 50cc bike and be out on the road with no training whatsoever the same day.

Hmmm? let`s put that into context!

How many 14 year olds are there on the island?
How many actually want a 50cc moped?
How many 14 olds on the island actually have a provisional?
How many 14 year olds on the island can afford a 50cc moped + insurance + tax + all the kit to go with it.
How many parents on the island are going to let thier kids do that even if they can afford it?
what`s the traffic on the island like when you compere it to the mainland?

I think that a small island like Gurnsey have the right conditions for that to work (no mandatory training) although training is a good idea if possible.

How many 14 year olds are there on the island? ** 680
How many actually want a 50cc moped? ** Apart from a bicycle or horse it would be their only means of personal transport I know that in my daughters class (of 29) 12 are planning to get a 50cc moped. Assuming that is reflected across the 10 high schools and private schools, around 360.
How many 14 olds on the island actually have a provisional? ** ? They can all get a provisional if they want at age 14 without taking any tests.
How many 14 year olds on the island can afford a 50cc moped + insurance + tax + all the kit to go with it. ** there are deals locally for £1695 which include bike, helmet, gloves, waterproofs and jacket, comprehensive insurance (£325 on it's own) first service and the CBT fee. There is no road tax, we pay for that with a 10p surcharge per litre of fuel. We do not have VAT.
How many parents on the island are going to let thier kids do that even if they can afford it? ** Last year 412.
what`s the traffic on the island like when you compere it to the mainland? ** 35mph island-wide speed limit, many sections 20 or 25mph, mainly urban in the north and east of the island, rural in the south and west. Fairly crowded roads, but speeds in general much lower.

I think that a small island like Gurnsey have the right conditions for that to work (no mandatory training) although training is a good idea if possible.

My daughter has her CBT booked for the weekend after her 14th birthday in April, but we had to book it before Christmas, I tend to agree that no CBT could work, but I do think it's preferable to have some form of training.

In addition our Theory test is 50 questions 43 correct to pass with some localised questions (Filter in Turn', 'Yellow Line at a junction means stop' etc.) we do not have the hazard Perception test. If you take and pass your full test at 14, you can have a 125cc at 15, any cc at 17. Smile

Someone told me that on Guernsey there's no cc or bhp restriction for provisional riders at 17 - so if you wanted to learn to ride a 750, you just get one and put 'L' plates on it... is that true?

Sounds fine really.

Drop the CBT and let the kids ride.

It's only a tiny island, so not like they'll be in major traffic

Sort of - It goes

14 years old, Cat A1 provisional after a CBT 50cc bike or moped
16 years old, after having Cat A1 full for 12 months, can ride <125cc
17 years old, with 1 years full Cat A1 can ride any size bike after a 2 hour DA course
18 years old, either Cat A Provisional license and full CBT, any bike, no restrictions, or 18yo with 1 year flu Cat A1, any size bike after 2 hour DA.

Hope you got all that - there's a test later! Smile

I vacillate between thinking it'll be fine to drop the CBT and then as a parent going NOOOOOOOOO!

My 14 year old daughter managed to stack her brother's SR50 the second time she got on it last week just going down the drive! She'll be taking her CBT in April the weekend after her 14th birthday on her Aprilia RS50.

I know I will feel happier after she's gone through the 2-day CBT training, I could help with her training, but what teenage girl listens to her father?

Donkeys years ago I visited Gurnsey and trundled around it in a Nissan Micra, a ludicrously overpowered car for such a small island. I can't imagine a finer place on the planet to poodle around on a moped. They should just dump the regs and allow anyone who can reach the handlebars and put a toe on the ground ride one.
