I've got a couple of these and like the 'zoom'; but ideally want more light
https://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/NTg1WDU4NQ==/$(KGrHqZ,!jQE68-o)i!1BO+oVPEifQ~~60_12.JPG

Lots on ebay, but not sure which figures to believe.

Looking hand held really, but could do with a new head torch while I'm at it, actually.

Aahh, nice torch. It is known colloquially as the 'x2000 zoom'. It is one of the more popular torches. I assume as you have an x2000 you have a setup for charging li-ion 18650 (good start). You are correct to dismiss most of the numbers as bogus, they are.

The x2000 (AFAIK) uses a CREE P4 LED.

The current hot LED at the moment is the CREE XM-L T6, it can crank out a maximum of 975 lumens. Unfortunatley 'zoom' torches are just not that popular.

However there is this.

It will be f******* bright and has a zoom. Ignore the horse shit about it being 1600 lumen, the datasheet for the LED says it is 975 max for that diode.

I do have a 18650 charging setup somewhere, but have just been using rechargeable AAAs in mine because it's 'somewhere'.

I do like the zoom for various things - ie dog walking so I can pin point exactly what the dog's doing some distance away, still.
(And, of course, pretending it's a massive light sabre Razz.)
Ideally I'd have a little more so that the beam is properly focused to be straight and doesn't diverge at all.

Seems there are a good few T6 ones around, so might get another 18650 charging setup at the same time.

This one is probably a real 700-800 lumens (judging by my other torches... Wink ), cheap as chips for what it is, nicely made, if you're picky the beam pattern shows the contacts to the LED die.

So good, my next door neighbour (who doesn't even like torches as such) made me write down all the links for this torch, batteries and charger Smile

There are better/brighter torches, but they mostly cost LOTS more Laughing

Cheers - how tight is the beam pattern when 'zoomed in'?

On the above torch I have you can see the contacts on the LED when zoomed in, but that's never bothered me.

Mine was about £45 last year.

Not as tight as the x2000 types, but then the die is about 4 times the size. Mine goes to smooth square just before max adjustment, then you get a little halo overspill as the die comes just about into focus. It's a real spotlight when pulled down to the square; so much so that I rarely use it that tight.
What sort of distance will you be using the spot at?

Cheers - don't suppose you know if the T6 ones that have x 2000 markings on them do have a tighter pattern.

Can't think of any 'good' reason to need it as with a brighter torch sure it'll be fine for most practical purposes - so I'll go with "so I can shine my torch on things far away and be impressed that I've got a torch that can shine on things far away" Smile.

Also, is one or two batteries likely to make the torch any brighter, or just last for longer?

I cannot comment on the beam pattern, like all the shit you buy from china you pays yer money, and get a product that is approximately what you wanted.

The XMl T6 has a maximum forward voltage of 2.9-3.35V. That is above the voltage provided by either an 18650 or 3xAAA. The voltage from the battery is 'stepped down' for the LED by a driver so it does not pop. The quality of the driver is generally dictated by how much you pay for the torch.

In general though, for cheap torches, MOAR BATTERIES==MOAR POWUH (that gets dimmer as the battery discharges).

For expensive torches (with a proper buck/boost converter) moar batteries just mean it will last longer.

If you want't to be baffled by an insane range of torches, go to dealextreme.com (warning dealextremes delivery time is utterly shocking).

I bought a bunch of Cree P5 LED's from Deal Extreme and the delivery was quite efficient.
It's a bit of a lottery getting anything shipped from China because some things get held up for long periods in UK customs. I bought a graduated loupe in early december and received it mid January last year - they had shipped it next day. Felt sorry for them as they caught a load of Neg feedback for poor delivery times from people who probably ended up with two items after complaining.

Manafont only show stock that they've actually got, whereas dealextreme show stock they're planning on putting on order on for onc ehtey've got enough orders (or something... lead time is usually MUCH longer). So, more choice at DX, but if manafont have the same thing it'll almost certainly turn up quicker.

Yes, of course cheap stuff from China has some drawbacks and some lack of consistancy/QC, but my T6 was $32 = approx £20 ish; my Tiablo AceG whilst nicer in every way and brighter (although not zoomable) was £120 - so you pays your money..... 5 or 6 T6s taped together would be brighter Wink

I got this: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/170773689772 after I thought I'd lost my x2000s, then found them after.

Arrived today.

It definitely chucks out a lot more light.
Not as much as I'd like, but can't really complain for £30 including batteries and charger.

As suggested, it doesn't get quite as tight. Which means fully zoomed in it's only a bit brighter - however it is brighter at probably at least twice the area for a distance of around 40 meters.

Fully zoomed in on a wall about 1m away, comparing my original 'x2000' with the new torch:
https://gees.zenfolio.com/img/s3/v44/p508807028.jpg

And the same wall, but fully zoomed out; same camera settings (manual mode) for both:
https://gees.zenfolio.com/img/s11/v35/p28110390.jpg
https://gees.zenfolio.com/img/s3/v38/p278090573.jpg

Will use it as an excuse to take the dog for a walk through that dark forest tonight.
Quick trip for the dog to relieve himself down the side at work and it was noticeable that the foliage/path directly infront of me were pretty bright, though not quite blinding when first turned on.

I still want a bright torch that can go produce a parallel (from the lens) beam so that I can shine it on things really far away for the sake of it Smile.

Ta for the help people Thumbs Up.

Well, that didn't last long.

Stuck the batteries back on to charge, tried it again and it's flashing on and off (not just the setting that does that Rolling Eyes.)

Seems to be the driver bit rather than the end cap.

You said "not just the setting" so I guess you know about he modes on the tail cap.

Sometimes you need to clean up the threads on these torches to make a good current path; also sometimes I've had to add a little solder to the connections, especially in the tail cap. The switch and the LED driver pill usually need to be unscrewed from inside the tube which can be a PITA - look for small pits in the surface to stick something pointy in and push round.

Have you checked the voltage on the batteries?

Now pretty sure it's just that the spring's a big slack.

Hold it pointing down (batteries weighting spring) and it hardly works. Flat it's not too bad, but needs a 'tap' sometimes and you can't move it about too much. Pointing up and even with a fair bit of jiggling it mostly works.

And yes, aware of the modes on the tail cap*, it's random and actually changing modes for me - waiting to put it down and it to go in to SOS mode!

*While taking pics I noticed especially with the x2000 that on the camera screen the light seemed to flicker on low power mode. Wonder if it's actually pulsing it to achieve the lower output. (Will google it when I get a min.)

Yes, these torches are PWMed to give med/low. Try using one in the (dark and) rain (which means anytime, here in Wales Wink ) for a pretty effect Smile

Put a nut between the batteries and working fine, but don't really want that as a permanent solution - have emailed the seller.

The seller will not do fuck all. Either use a small neodynium magnet on the battery to make it longer or bodge the torch with some solder.

The seller has in fact not done that - he mentioned that they do occasionally see the springs getting too squashed up and pulling it out.
He offered a replacement if I didn't want to do it, or it doesn't work.

Ebay is a seller's nightmare, but does make it nice for buyers; especially when we're talking a UK seller with 100% feedback on a good few thousand items.
I'll try pulling the spring out later; much as I'd like to blag a spare, well know what it's like to be messed around by buyers.

Bought one of these as my last torch bit the dust. I'm pretty chuffed with it. I've not owned a torch this bright before!

However I'm thinking about batteries now. Is it worth me getting an 18650 set up for it?

I've got an AAA battery charger and I was planning on getting some 1800mah batteries from ebay. Will this be better than the 3.6v and ~2800mah I'd get with a single 18650? I'm trying to remember my electrical theory and not sure whether the battery pack is in series or paralel...

What do you reckon?
