I am looking for some luggage, that I can fit to my current bike and then to any later ones I buy. It has been pointed out to me that the wingrack systems are universal, just a different fitting kit for different bikes.

Now I'd like to be able to fit one to a 93 xj600, 96 rf900 and maybe even a 99 te610 (although unlikely I feel)

Has anyone got any experience in fitting them, or can explain how they are mounted/ease of using a universal kit?

Cheers

Haven't ever fitted one, my 900 diversion came with it in situ - excellent for quickly removing and attaching panniers/top box when you need to and you've got a huge choice of options and sizes both new and secondhand, its great that all the givi luggage new and old use the same mechanism to attach.
As far as I can tell they attach to the footrest hangers by means of a support tube and sub-frame tubing beneath the plastic though I've never dismantled mine as it hasn't needed to be.
It is a brilliant luggage system.

Wingracks are great and fairly easy to get hold of. The problem comes with the fitting kit, especially for older bikes. Givi don’t seem to keep stock of old kits so you’re relying on their resellers or Ebay.

My CB500 came with a Wingrack fitted, but no boxes so I picked up cheap 2nd hand boxes from Ebay. I removed the rack for a few months because it was so heavy and ugly, but put it back on when I started a regular London commute last summer. I normally only use the top box, but I have the side cases should I need to stash my riding gear and turn up for meetings looking like a normal person.

I looked around for a Wingrack for my CBR600 and eventually a brand new fitting kit for my vintage of bike came up on Ebay. I subsequently picked up another Wingrack (with VFR750 fitting kit that I didn’t need). This second Wingrack didn’t have indicators so I also bought a pair of those from Fleabay and put it all together.

You may need to tinker with suspension settings. The rack itself is I would say at least 10KG and each box is around 3.5KG when empty. The top box sits high and far back so, depending on the bike, can introduce a light feel or even wobbles to the front when loaded. I just added some preload to the rear and most unpleasantness disappeared.

Never had any trouble changing the battery with wingrack in situ. The only time I disturbed it was when I was trying to get the mudguard off to access the top shock mounting bolt.
