If anyone fancies some CD's or DVD's for nowt then all you have to do is nip down to your nearest HMV store and help yourself:-

Maybe there is more to the story than this?

Even so, chasing down a thief for some DVDs is probably not a great idea, if they have a knife, who is going to be paying out the compensation? HMV I'd imagine! And it'll be a lot more than a few DVDs.

Has to be. Many shops have this policy to protect their staff. However if it really is that open and shut I do think they should have used a bit of common sense. Personally I don't understand why he didn't just radio it over to the shopping centre security so they could do the stop.

The link says hmv suggest an accumulation of errors. Typical daily mail article: bunch of opinionated crap, skewed completely to provoke outrage and then 3 lines of truth at the end to prove they provided balance. Problem is middle England is so appaplectic with rage by the time they get to those 3 lines they're incapable of reading.

'20 DVDs is £200'

Is £200 worth getting stabbed?

I had a knife pulled on me when I tried to stop someone stealing a couple cans of red bull from the shop I used to work in.

Learned my lesson there and then.

Another time, a manager in a shop a few miles away was stabbed in the leg trying to stop someone drinking a bottle of vodka IN the store.

I wonder what happened to the guy who stole the DVDs then. I'd put money on that he got away with a slap on the wrist.

Mr. Dunkable wouldn't have had a knife pulled on him, he is too cool for that, but I do see what you're saying, we should stab shoplifters before they stab us, but if you're as cool as Dunkable there is no need as you wont get stabbed.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought it was only an offense AFTER you leave the shop with the goods?

Point being, if HMV's store policy is to only nab them whilst they're inside the store and not pursue once they've left, technically they've done nothing wrong?
