I used to do this with my toys as a kid, I just had to know how they work.

If you ca manage to get a small engine or even a clapped out old bike that seen much better days it give you a great starting point to learn about motorbike engines.

I did my first full engine rebuild last year, never one before, managed it fine with a few decent tools, a haynes manual and plenty or patience.

Don't worry if you get things wrong! Making mistakes only enhances your knowledge, how are you going to learn if you don't make mistakes?

As above, Haynes Basic, very good starting point. Maybe take up some kind of course at college or something? Get hands on.
