When I were a lad if you wanted to change to one of the other three channels you had to make your little brother get up and twist the tuning knob whilst you told him exactly when to stop.

Then you had to send him back because him standing by the telly made the signal better than when he sat down again.

Quite often it's not the batteries going flat, but the connections inside the controller being dirty and providing a poor connection. Taking the controller apart and cleaning the circuit board usually does the trick!
