I've been doing a bit of reasearch on the insurance quotes...
It would appear that unlike every car quote i've ever run up, third party only is significantly cheaper and drops the insurance down to a few hundred!
Which then leads me to think why not get a bike thats a bit older and rougher, get it insured TPO as this would add up to less than the cost of buying a newish used YBR, and having been to the dealership the other day and had a sit on a YBR im not convinced that i'd be able to put up with the mileage i intend on doing. Im assuming the CBF is much the same deal?
There's two honda varadero 125's popped up locally for sub 1400, and im lead to belive they're about as comfy as im likely to get on a 125 & pretty reliable too. However they are quite high mileage.
One has 27,000 on it, gold renthal bars , and an arrow exhaust. Overall condition looks to be good, no major dents or scratches. 2001 model.
The other has 24,000 on it, and has just had two new tyres, chain and sprocket done. Condition is average, tiny hole in the seat & a dent in the side of the tank. its on a 2004
Again around this price tag there's a honda XR125 - which looks to be a slightly bigger bike than average..although at 1500. Looks clean, comes with the top box, new chain & sprockets...but 28,000 miles on the clock 2007 model.
Or there's various YBR's and CBF's out there with about 10-15k on em between 2007-2010 models.
I intend to whack quite a bit of mileage on whatever i do get, and have been advised to go honda by the other halfs old man as apparently "they make a good reliable engine" & having seen some of the abuse a few local CBR's get i'd belive it! However im just not sure if the high mileage bikes would take to it. Im likely to have the bike for around 6 months whilst i get my test done. Are the above mentioned bikes going to cause any serious problems when it comes down to doing said test?
Many thanks

Yup. If you factor in the excess plus the higher insurance costs after you claim, it's hardly worth claiming for fire/theft on a bike worth less than £1000 - £1500, depending on your exact situation. Spend the savings on security.

They make many good, reliably engines, but it's too soon to know if the made-in-India CBF is going to be one of them - we've seen reports of them burning oil and seizing, or running into expensive issues with the FI gubbins. The Varadero doesn't have any problems that I'm aware of.
On the other hand, people ride the YBR around the world.

If I can pass on my Chinese copy-bike, you can pass on anything Japanese branded in half decent condition.
You're not going to know what does and doesn't suit you until you've put in a hard day's riding on it, and there's no magic formula for getting a bike that's guaranteed to be 100% reliable, so I'd suggest that you grab whatever takes your fancy and get riding. If you can't live with it, sell it in April for what you paid for it. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.
