Looks like the tensioner for the belt for when it goes slack.

Amazing bike mate, absolutely stunning! Thumbs Up

What's the reason for a belt like that over a chain?

Longer service life, no need to lube or tension. Harleys tend to run them, and Buell used HD motors. Buell also liked to do things a little differently.

Um, it's a belt drive with a pulley for a sprocket. haha.

Hmmm... On a Buell with a stock tensioner they last roughly 10,000 miles and cost roughly £210, so it's not really cheaper or longer lasting than a chain. With the Free spirits tensioner it should be good for 25,000 miles though, which is a bit better.

Also, the motor is HD derived, but is different enough that almost no parts are the same from the original Harley Sportster motor to the Buell Thunderbolt motor. Which means that if you blow a Buell motor it's almost impossible to source or rebuild it as Harley parts don't fit.

Ah, yeah I got a Triple, a CBR250RR and the Buell at the moment. Thumbs Up

Buell and CBR250 are having to go as I'm hunting down a CCM FT35 at the moment. The triple is my every day bike so that stays, the other two are being sacrificed.

It's cool, just took me by surprise. Most, if not all, Harley Davidsons have belt drives, I guess if you're not into cruisers at all you wouldn't neccessarily look close enough to see.

The headlight / screen looks a bit weird to me, but the rest of it is nice.

Very Noice!

If I ever get the money and theres still enough petrol left in the world a Buell is definitely on the cards.

Don't know why but the front fairing has a bit of a TL1000S vibe about it which is by no means a bad thing.

The day I buy a bike that people do not have an opinion on will be the day I will give up biking. I can deal with people having negative opinions about a bike, it shows there is something in the design to be commented on. Generic bikes designed for the masses aim to please everyone and always end up pleasing no one.

For the record, I hate the front fairing and much prefer the look of the naked Lightning S, however Firebolts are a bit cheaper and more attainable than the S. Hence why I ended up with one. Laughing

I had an SV1000 naked and really liked it. It's got to either be fully faired or naked for me, bikini fairings are a cop out. Unfortunately Mr. Erik liked them a lot it seemed Smile

Nice bike!

Belt drive has made me think, why don't chain drives come with tensioners?

Because they would be pointless on a chain, belts do not stretch over time, hence the rear wheel on the buell does not move. Chains do, so you would have an unecessary tensioner and still have to move the rear axle to take up slack in the chain.

The only reason the Buell has a tensioner at all is to maintain tension on the belt as the swingarm moves up and down. The belt doesn't stretch as the swingarm changes length as it moves through it's arc. Which also is why mine has an aftermarket sprung tensioner on it, the stock one snaps belts as it does not move as the belt tension is loaded and released. Stupid move by Buell that was for some reason never corrected all through the model years.

Thumbs Up

Yeh but couldn't you have a tensioner instead of moving the wheel back in the swingarm? So the tensioner takes up all the slack as the chain stretches throughout its life? Or would the heavy chain need such a stiff tensioner it would cause so much more wear and drag?

chain's don't actually stretch, it's the wear of the metal where the rivet rotates inside of the bush as the chain links straighten and flex as the chain goes on and off the sprockets.
