So how far can I expect my reserve to last having switched it over on the tap?
I'm sure it varies but about how far would you risk it....

30 miles is a fairly safe assumption, unless you've got fists of meat, and abuse the throttle. What's the bike in question?

My Bandit does about 50 miles in good weather, about 60-65 this time of year.

I got a starvation stutter, about five miles from home on the VF once, switched to reserve at the bottom of the hill coming up to the roundabout, with four miles of by-pass between me and home, and three to the petrol station on the edge of town..... I coasted into the petrol station on vapour!

Lesson: when you hit reserve; back off the gas!

VF is supposed to have 3/4 gallon reserve! It didn't go very far!

Most bikes, it's around half a gallon, 'ish', it ought to get you ten miles at the very least; good enough to get to a pump, but ONLY if you use it wisely!

Well there you go 17 miles, not bad really. I was averaging about 40 mph on the reserve. I'm not sure how far petrol stations are apart but I reckon I can reach one from most places.... if I know where the next one is Laughing

Until the bike grinds to a halt.

As soon as my little orange light tells me I need to feed the bike I start hunting for a petrol station right away.

The CB500 has an 18L tank, of which 2.5L are the reserve; I have to switch to reserve just before 200 miles, which gives me around 35 miles to find a garage with normal riding. I normally fill up when it hits about 180 miles anyhoo.

From bitter experience, whatever distance you're travelling the reserve usually lasts about a mile less than you need it to Embarassed

...nope, sorry. Can't read your mind to find out what bike you have. Are you sitting in a Faraday cage? I'm normally quite good at this.

Don't risk reserve to be honest I would have to carry extra petrol with me to test how many miles I can get with cause and that is just asking for trouble in my opinion.

Also If I don't touch reserve I know I'm safe encase I have to do a journey and forget it is on reserve nothing worse than being on reserve and forgetting about it Laughing
