I run a biz and NEED to take phone calls from customers. Some of them simply haven't grasped the concept of mobile phone numbers or email.

My problem is I am constantly being harrassed (think every hour to thirty minutes) by Indian sales people who tersely ask for the owner and are rude to me. Trying to sell me gas, electricity or something else. Usually they become agressive and start swearing at me. At which I put down the phone. Granted I have caller ID but again some of my customers call on withheld numbers.

Which results in them calling me back and demanding why I have put the phone down on them. It almost invariably ends up in them using an Fword bomb on me.

Is there any cheap/free method in which to block such calls? As the last NINETEEN calls today have been harrassing Indian blokes who call themselves steve or something.

Sometimes they demand I buy their product and being English sort of exploits my tendency not to cut in and interupt them. This morning I had gas and water offered to me. And a phone contract where he wouldn't let me get a word in edgeways and demanded (yes demanded) I give him my company card number.

Being rude and agressive back to them does not work.
Wasting their time does not seem to work (and some of my customers are asking why they can't get through). I did keep a guy on the phone for 10 minutes occassionally saying just a minute.

I've heard of something called the telephone preference service. But TBH I'm not exactly sure what I am signing myself up for. Does it work? Are there any other methods.

I'm not so fussed about prank calls tbh, as they generally tend to get bored after I don't rise to them

It is getting the the point where I would be quite happy for Pakistan and India to have a thermo nuclear war with each other so I don't get so many darned calls.

Try registering on the TPS / CTPS.

This should stop 90% of sales or marketing calls.

I work in this environment with B2B Mobile Phones, and call centres have to screen their data against the TPS lists to comply with certain regulations.

Alternatively if they persist, ask for their contact details and ask them to stop calling you.

Sorry if we've called you at JT communications regarding your mobile phone, as I can appreciate it is a nuisance!

It does work for most things. Still get calls from machines trying to tell me to claim back miss sold ppi as the telephone preference service is only meant to apply to live calls.

All the best

When they phone ask them to take you off their dialling list. If you ask, they have to by law. I do this the odd times I get a cold call and I rarely get .

if its frustrating you their tactic is working and may eventually break. Stop being so English there not playing ball, just keep hanging up. Or when they ask for the boss forward their call to a bank automated service.

What kind of telesales drone wastes his time calling a customer who's just told him to fvck off? They're on commission, you're making no sense, and it would have taken less time to get on the TPS than to ask about it.

AS soon as the start the script hang up. If they ring back hang up again. Repeat until they get the message - you don't have to respond to cold callers or take abuse off them, just hang up before they say more than the first few words.

TPS is pretty good but some of them (specially the automated ones) still get through. Once you've registered and waited the required number of days you can ask anyone who rings for their head office details and threaten to report them - they will normally hang up on you at this point!

The TPS only works for domestic calls; there's nothing you can do about international calls except hang up as soon as you realise what's going on. It's pointless trying to rationalise or engage these people, they don't care so nor should you.

+1

I've been employed to do these kind of calls myself, and to be honest, hanging up is the best way to deal with them. Don't waste your breath.

It may be a hit harsh, but they should be used to it.

In theory, companies should pay attention to tps stuff, but in practise, they don't always.

I'm bombarded with scores of these calls every week. Whilst the calls annoy me and consume a considerable amount of my time I've never been abused by any of the callers.......it's usually been the other way around.

+1 for this. I can confirm that TPS has NO control over organisations calling from outside UK - and the majority of the calls you receive will come from outside UK. That said TPS also seem to FAIL miserably even when some calls are from within UK !!

Remember that with TPS you have to re-register every 12 months.

I have been getting an ever increasing amount of these calls lately too.

The best one was last week.
me - "hello?"
them - "Hello can i speak to the man of the house?"
me - Rolling Eyes "Nope, go away, not interested."
Then they have the cheek to say -
"Excuuuuse me! May i finish what i was about to say!!?"

Cheeky bastard!
Laughing

Just went on that TPS site only to remember that i registered on there years ago. It certainly doesn't seem to be working very well...

There's no way to get rid of them, they've got a job to do just like you have, only difference is they have someone constantly pressuring them to hit targets/make more calls

TPS helps, but doesn't solve much

I get these a lot, usually I just say
"My landlord takes care of these, can you take my number off the call list please"

Otherwise I troll them, leave them on the side listening to me work, one I do at home is just put porn on, and tell them I am masturbating and ask if it is getting them hot, works well if they are male, make sure it is really loud so they can hear them pronz going.

Steer the conversation towards ponies etc, trolling them is just as fun, I know it blocks your line for a bit.

Oh and if you go down the rape alarm/whistle route, do this
"Do I know you?"
"no sir"
"My mum said never to talk to strangers, but you seem nice enough"
"reply"
"Wait, don't touch me there, that is inappropriate touching, (then shout) STRANGER DANGER, STRANGER DANGER (whilst blowing whistle)"

I also get a constant stream but I either just hang up or say "remove my number from your list" and then hang up.

No guilt at all. It's not rude to yell fuck off as you hang up.

They are being rude, calling you when you don't want or need them to call, potentially costing you money and wasting your time.

I've saved a few numbers under 'ignore' or 'give abuse', 'abuse totally' will really get it when and if they call again

Indeed, they are crap and cover UK only, B2B & B2C.
