Wow I just wrote a lot that jsut vanished D:

Ok, skim the fat
First day on bike, went well, some nubby stalling pulling off, comfortable, feelsgoodman, looked down for a second once at my dash then back up and wa sliek fuuu as the ca rin front suddenly braked, broke so hard the back of the bike kicked out a bit, and the car in the next lane honked at me like FUUUU-
Other than that it was ok

I got a yamaha 2009 ybr125

My helmet, bought this https://www.mcaleicester.co.uk/products/helmets/1254
on the cheap till i get mo' money
The strap is weird, not like the usually big cable tie type thing, its like a belt with a push button and two buckle things, any idea how to tighten it? (Been trying for a while now o.O)

Checks & Maintaining

I'm sure this thread crops up repeatedly
So like for maintaining it well, oil changes (errr no idea how)
and err? Air filter or something? What is?
I'm such a nub i spent 10 minutes trying to screw the petrol cap back in, and half hour trying to get the goddammn lock to close.

Words! Thumbs Up

Been there - car in front decided to do an emergency stop for no reason and had no brake lights! No probs though, fortunately, I had maintained a safe distance and was able to stop safely.

Does the helmet have two D shaped rings, velcro or press-studs anywhere? If you can't figure it out, ring the supplier and ask.

As for maintenance and servicing - there's a section on here with lots of manuals you can download. If you can't find the exact one, something for a similar make and model will do to get you started.

2 D shaped rings with a press stud
I was fingering it for a good amount of time and couldn't get it to tighten up Embarassed

And o rly, i'll have a search around!

I wanted to ask, what papers should I bring out with me when I ride? Do people generally keep insurance papers with them or?

Would my provisional on its own be ok?

Also! Anyone know if yamaha ybr125 seat lifts up?
I've got a big bike lock chain I have no idea how to carry around with me on the bike without a backpack of sorts!
I was hoping for underseat storage but I cant find a way to lift it up lol Thumbs Down

For maintenance and servicing if you are unsure nip down your local bike shop or online and order a Haynes manual they can be confusing however maintenance wise it will tell you all you need to know about your bike.

If you are still unsure there is always workshop Thumbs Up

Then stop fingering it! There's your problem!

Srsly put the strap through both of the D's, fold it back over the top of the first D and then under the second D and the press stud is there to attach the rest of the strap to. There should be a matching popper on the strap.

And when you ride you don't need to carry your insurance docs with you, you can carry copies of them if you wish. I tend to have their name, phone number and my policy number stored in my phone. Good idea to carry your licence/provisional with you just in case you get pulled over. Shove a tenner in a waterproof bag and store it under your seat for emergency petrol money too.

On one of my helmets that uses the Double D strap It doesn't have any poppers on. Hmm flaw possibly Thinking

I never thought i'd find myself in a position where I don't like Double D's Laughing

Wow magic! How the hell did I not manage that before lol
It's turned into a belt now! Simple! Thanks for that! Exclamation!

Err guys, just realised I may have forgot to sort the tax out on it...
Is there a way to check if it's taxed online or something?
I guess there should be a tax disc on the wheel.... better go check *runs*

Edit: Awwww piss, can't see a tax disc on it anywhere, or even where the tax disc would even go?

WHAT DO?

Didn't the bike have a previous owner?

You didn't just 'find' the bike, did you? Embarassed

Double D ring which is FAR more common than the 'big cable tie type thing'

I'd say 80% of helmets have the Double D ring,

He checked on DVLA website somehow,
Turns out it's taxed till novemember this year ^_^

I have a lid that does up with the "Big cable-tie thing" Very Happy So easy to put on, even with gloves (with a little practice Wink)

Glad you're enjoying the first few days on your bike. Smile Don't worry about that other motorist honking at you, if you have L's on, they should expect you to make the odd mistake.

Have fun and ride safe Thumbs UpSmile

It's the knobs who get away with it - the good guys get hammered!

You need to display a valid disk to stay legal - doesn't matter if it is paid-up or not. Not having and not displaying are two separate offences.

I once got a fixed penalty ticket for not displaying whilst I was actually queuing in the Post Office for a new tax disk - but I took the ticket and the new disk to the police station the same day and explained, and they cancelled the ticket.

With my luck, I would go to the Post Office with my Insurance and MOT and tax it myself (I don't think you need the V5 for this). If you later get a replacement disk from DVLA (do you have to pay for this?), you can surrender it (or the new one) for a refund.

It's taxed till November (see my last post)
Just need the disc now, is there any leeway? I heard you get 5 days or something?

And thats a big dick! Glad you got out of it... Mostly I only park my bike on our work parking lot or in my backgarden, so hopefully I can get awya with it for a while....

Problem is I dont have the V5 reference number until I get the logbook from DVLa, which ive been told can take 1 week or even 3 weeks depending on how they feel, lol

Soooo tempting to take it for a spin, but honestly, don't do it, not when you are just starting out and you've got a perfect clean license. Chances are your V5 will be with you in just a couple of days so wait it out.

About your helmet, the double-D ring type straps are simple enough and they are easier to adjust but I've always preferred the click-in type.

No, the guy who has your money has told you that it's taxed until November.

Check yourself - look for "Date of liability".

Nope, that's only from the start of the month (if the VED just ran out), there's no leeway for new owners.

Welcome to form V20 and £7.

You could probably just get a new disc at a post office for £16 plus the new keeper slip and a copy of your insurance.

You only get 5 days 'leeway' if it is less than 5 days since the last tax disk expired and you have already applied (and paid) for a new one, but haven't received it yet - you don't get the 5 day period unless you have applied.

IIRC, you only need insurance, MOT and a form from the Post Office to apply for new tax.

You only get that for the first five days of the month though. So it's too late at this point.
