Question on the motorbike test, PLEASE!

I have a Honda Cbf 125.
I want to do my motorbike test before it goes up next year!
BUT
Can I do my test on my bike or do I have to use there 500cc?

Really need some help on this,

You can do the test on your bike, but you will be restricted to 33bhp for 2 years. If you did the test on a bike that meets the DAS requirements (which most 500s will), then you would be able to ride any bike immediately.

Also, not sure who "their" is, but the DVLA won't provide a bike to do the test on, you have to bring your own (or use one from a training school).

The Honda CBF125 is on the DSA approved list for the 'Standard' motorcycle test; so YES, is the short answer.

Currently test process comprises of MOTORCYCLE Theroy/Hazard test; to be done before Practical Exam Mod 1, to be done before Practical Exam Mod 2.

Doesn't matter what bike you use, tests are the same as is price.

Different bikes comply with different test 'schemes':

'Light Bike' - is the test on a machine up to 120cc or not on teh DSA approval list. Passing tests under 'Light-Bike' rules gets you a full Licence with A1 entitlement; basically a learner legal 125, but you can use motorways, carry pillions & dont have to display L's.

'Standard Bike' - is the ordinary test, done on a 120-125cc machine, on the DSA approval list. Yours is. Passing test gets you a full licence with A group entitlement, but 2 year 33bhp 'probationary' restriction; that lapses after 24 months, to allow any power A group bike to be ridden, without any further tests to be passed.

'Big-Bike' or 'DAS' depending on the bit of paperwork you look at - is the same tests on a 500cc machine. There are certain rules for the capacity & power, I think it has to be over 400cc & 45bhp or something. You have to be over 21 to test under DAS rules, and passing tests under DAS awards you with Full licence with A group entitlement, but NO probationary restrictions.

As from next year, rules are still uncertain, but, the test schemes will accord more closely to the licence groupings of A1- 125 only A2 (we currently dont have, but often used to describe A-Restricted) - allowing a 45bhp bike, and then full unrestricted A.

DAS will daftly still allow direct eligibility of full A group entitlement, though qualifying age goes up to 24.

A1 will take on the 'standard-Bike' criteria of needing a DSA approved 120-124cc bike

A2, will be gained... we dont know quite know; But test schedule mandates a 400cc bike of 40-45bhp I think, and pottentially holding A1 for two years before you can do it.

SO; at the MOMENT, you can test on your 125 and gain full A group entitlement with probationary 33bhp restriction.

I suspect fact that many people wrongly describe that as 'A2' has given you the 'idea' that you HAVE to use a 500 to test on to get it.... true, NEXT YEAR when A2 comes in to force in the UK you will.... right NOW we dont HAVE a2, we have A-Restricted, gained on a 125.

Hey there Biker_Beth!

I am unsure how old you are, so I'll reply in two ways:

If you are 17-20:

Yes you can take your test on your 125cc. When you pass you will be subject to a restriction which means you are only licensed to ride motorcycles of 33bhp power or less. You CAN restrict 'bigger' bikes down to 33bhp if you wish, so you can ride a 1000cc bike as long as it is restricted.

The restriction is lifted when:

A) Two years from the date you passed your test.
B) You take another test when you are 21+ on a bike of 47bhp.

If you are 21 or older:

You CAN take a test on your 125 still, however you will STILL BE SUBJECT to the restriction as above.

The better course would be to hire a bike from a bike school, usually a 500cc and do some lessons with them and use their bike for the test also.

If you pass your test on a bike of 47bhp or so and you take your DAS test, you are immediately the proud owner of a FULL bike licence and can ride any bike you wish with no restrictions.

My advice to you is the same as the other thread, DO YOUR TEST THIS YEAR NO MATTER WHAT.

You do NOT want to go through the new system being implemented in January next year unless you are 24 or older so you can your DAS then. It is a nasty system.

So my advice is to pass your test this year some time as you'll be better off for it.
