So, I passed my CBT (first time). Which I was chuffed about, but I don't feel like I'm ready to go out on my own, I know I'm not a dangerous rider, or they wouldn't have passed me, but I feel vulnerable being stuck at 30mph. Any advice/help???

Stuck at 30mph? So you have a 50cc?
One advice

GET RID OF IT.

I had a 50cc and it was awful, its so dangerous! (Not with the bike, but with the other drivers take over you!)

I didnt feel confidant at all on a 50cc.
Because I was so worried about other drivers, I couldnt focus very well on my riding!

MY ADVISE

Dont get a 125 just yet, as youre not too confidant yet.
But honda do a 110cc scooter.
I had it before my 50cc, then go my 125.
Its perfect!
Right in the middle of the 50 and 125.
Not too fast, not too slow.
That will build your confidence up. Top speed on that is about 50.

If you dont want to get a new bike,
Then ride on the side of the road a little.
Sure, bikes have just much right as cars so ride in the middle,
but as there are idiots out there, they have less chance of hitting you while over taking if youre on the side slightly than over taking you and nearly knocking you off your bike!

Totally feel for you. My first time out after completing my CBT I almost ended up under the wheels of a car. It wasn't the car driver's fault in anyway, I just got overwhelmed and made a few mistakes at once.

Try and go to somewhere quiet and get lots of practise in, this should help improve your confidence on the bike. As you get more confident start moving in to slightly more busy areas, etc.

Unfortunately, being stuck at 30 is going to cause you some hassle. You may find that drivers perform unsafe overtakes to get past you or try and force you in to the gutter of the road. As for some advice, don't ever let yourself get forced in to the gutter. Sure you may be thinking "I'm going slow, if I stick to the side they can get past me easily", but don't do it. You ride in a safe road position and if someone wants to overtake you then it's their job to do it safely.

Hmm... It seems you have me mistaken slightly -
I'm only 16,

So I am only legally allowed a 50cc

Ah in that case, wait it out!
Nearly all bikers have started out like that.
In fact, Im glad I started with a 50cc as it taught me
alot about the roads.
If you got mates with bikes, go on a little ride with them.
That my help?

Stay safe Thumbs Up

I disagree. I own a CBF 125 and I love riding on it, sure its not as fast as a 500, but its definitely just as fun.

Yes, but you won't like it.

Do you turn 17 before January 19th 2013?

Then ride the 50 until you get sick of it. Sell it in the spring before it explodes or get stolen or wrecked, while it's still worth something. Buy a pushbike and put the rest of the money in a big jar marked "Standard bike test".

Ride the pushbike to get some more road sense.

Book and pass your theory test ASAP (I think you can do that before you're 17?).

A few weeks before your 17th birthday, buy any 125cc commuter bike. Ride it on the sly to practice slow speed stuff. Book a Module 1 'standard' motorcycle test for your 17th birthday. Pass it like a boss.

Then book and pass Module 2 and get yourself a proper A (<= 25kW) license before January 19th 2013. If you miss that date then prepare to be stuck on a 125 until you hit 19. It'll be a loooong wait.

Birthday is February 9th!

I guess I should get saving for a good 125 then - seeing as I'll be stuck with it??

Awww that sucks... If I was you I'd start saving right now for a YZF r125.

Gotta be the sexiest 125 out there, will do 80mph as well. Very Happy

Just save for a 125 if your birthday is so close. Then do your test as soon as you can.

As for not feeling safe i failed my cbt 3 times and didnt feel safe at all on the road. i just found that by riding around the places i knew a couple of times taught me that i was decent enough to go anywhere.

If you're going to be stuck on a 50cc moped, then it is ALL ABOUT ROAD POSITIONING.

Assert yourself on the road, drive to the right of centre in the lane, this will FORCE the cars to go into the other lane if they want to overtake you, and as a result will deter most cars unless you're in a 40+ zone.

Aside from reducing the number of cars pulling risky overtakes, it also gives you practically the whole lane in which to avoid things like potholes, manhole covers etc. If you drive left-of-centre, you'll find cars are overtaking you whilst staying in the same lane, barely crossing the white lines, and they will force you into the gutter, putting you in a much more vulnerable and dangerous position.

Remember, you've paid your road tax, you have as much right as anyone else to be on the road, don't let cars push you out the way, be assertive (without being aggressive), and remember, EVERYONE IS OUT TO KILL YOU.

If you ride like that, there's no reason why you can't avoid most of the types of accidents mopeds are involved in.

There's always one numpty that thinks he/she can share the lane you're in, as Ben-B says, be assertive & don't allow you're to be 'forced' over. It's up to the car overrtaking you to make sure he/she has enough time & space to get past you.
You'll find the more ride time you get the more assured about riding you'll be.

Your birthday is February 9th? That means you must have done your CBT either on your birthday or the day after since you've only just turned 16. That sucks, you won't be allowed to ride anything bigger than a 125 until 2015 and you won't be allowed to ride without restrictions until the year 2017! We'll be living in Cities on the Moon by then!

There are two things I think you should focus on when you are learning to ride:

1. Be alert and always make certain you know what is going on around you; in front, behind and to the sides.

2. Learn how to navigate roundabouts until you don't feel nervous on them; I think roundabout more than anything else are the bane of learner riders.

Make it three things - 3. When you get your first 125cc bike, learn to take corners and sharp bends positively and fearlessly.

Oh, my usual observation applies: if you're going to pimp your ped (and most people do) then you'll be riding without a license, obtaining insurance by deception, and (possibly) riding without insurance - that's two or three criminal offences, plus your insurer will be able to sue you to recover any payouts that they make after it comes to light. I can't see any way that you'd be worse off just getting a 125 or bigger bike and lying about your age and license category (rather than about the bike).

I'm not advising that you do it, I'm making a point about the issue of de-restricting peds.

Hi bud, givin the timescale I would advise you to forget buying the 125 at the moment, use your cash on a training school, for one if by chance you drop it it's their bike not yours, given that you seem a bit nervous in certain situations the trainer will help iron these out, you will still be able to get road experience on the 50cc,( also to insure your own 125 is a big outlay, and for that amount would get you a lot of training ) while getting safe 125 experience under training conditions, Surprised ( surprised nobody has suggested that yet ) heed others advice on being assertive on your road position, stay right of middle in your lane is best place to be, and don't worry about what other drivers think, it's their problem not yours....good luck what ever you do Thumbs Up stay loose and safe Thumbs Up

Sadly the only cure for being nervous and "not ready" is to ride on the roads. Experience of being on the road is valuable and you never really stop learning. Stick to your 50cc 30MPH thing but ride sensibly.

Most of your riding will be in the town/estates where you live at that age and the limit for town riding is 30mph for the most part so you shouldnt really ride faster anyways.

As said above. Own your section of road. Ride in the middle of the lane, if your in a 30 zone and someone is trying to overtake you then they are the ones breaking the law, screw them. If they make you nervous then wait until its safe to pull over and let them past but dont ride like you have no right to be on the road.

Any experience you gain now will go in your favour when it comes to upgrading to a bigger bike, which you will want when you are 17. Get yourself a geared 125 when your old enough and not one like that picture that numpty posted above. Sure it may be a sexy bike but thats about all it is. Fast it is not.
