Hi, I’ve decided to buy a sat nav, a cheap ebay jobby as recommended in this thread HERE

5” CLICKY could you use this in a tank bag? Would it best to buy a dedicated bag such as the so easy rider V4 CLICKY or would a cheaper option such as this CLICKY be just as good?

Power – I would want to use it on longer journeys so battery power alone wont be enough. Is it easy enough to power from the battery? How would this be done for use in the wet? Would the so easy battery pack be a better idea?

Thanks

So my options are a 7” or a 5”.

7” CLICKY Is the 7” overkill? I like the idea of the bigger screen, easier to see and buttons will be larger and easier to press with gloves on. Problem with the 7” is that I cant find a waterproof case/mount for it so it would probably have to go in a tank bag. Will this cause it to move about? Buttons more difficult to press rather than through a dedicated case? Any other recommendations for mounting?

Personally I just use a Tom Tom Start car sat nav in a Hama case, charging off a cigarette lighter socket adapter tucked under the seat with the lead running up to the handlebars. I don't have much experience of other sat nav's (had a cheapo Binatone and an 'RAC' badged thing from Halfords which was utter shite) but find the Tom Tom durable, very bash resistant and I like the simple map-like uncluttered screen layout on the move. I paid £30 for mine secondhand and its been fine.

The Hama case is durable and costs about £15, certainly waterproof enough not to cause damage to the sat nav although condensation creeps in if you leave the case overnight (though nothing drastic, I just wipe it inside each morn.)

Similar to this:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bike-Waterproof-Handlebar-Mount-GPS-Sat-Nav-Case-/270877291285?_trksid=p3286.m7&_trkparms=algo%3DLVI%26itu%3DUCI%26otn%3D1%26po%3DLVI%26ps%3D63%26clkid%3D5219317658655992060

A dedicated case makes the sat nav much easier to use, clicking the screen, seeing it while riding etc just as its more or less solidly positioned and not far from your line of sight.

The Tom Tom probably only has a a 3 inch screen which I find is more than adequate, I don't personally feel the need for anything larger and it fits nicely between the bars without obscuring clocks etc...

Not trying to teach my granny to suck eggs but be aware that sat navs run on 5v not 12v. What looks like just a cigarette lighter plug that comes with them actually drops the voltage to 5v.

If you want to hard wire your sat nav (or it's mount) you can get convertors online that will do the job.

Maplins sell a Universal Mount Base for £6.99, but I prefer to keep mine in my pocket and just listen to the spoken directions through headphones.

I find that the tank bag option puts it too low and too close to me to look at effectively without taking your eyes off the road for too long.

I used to just put my old TomTom 710 in a bumbag and listen to the instructions, but last year I rigged up a cockpit solution. Sticky-backed Velcro in the cockpit and on the unit, power through the Optimate lead I have attached to the battery and an extension 3.5 mm lead soni can plug earphones in behind the tank. This means that when I get off the bike and forget I have the headphones plugged in (ie, always) they just pull out of the extension lead.

Weather protection comes thanks to being recessed behind the screen and aerodynamics.

Got me to the middle of Germany and back ok.

Make sure the unit you're getting has a headphone connection, not all do these days.

+1, anything that takes your attention off of the road is plus-bad, doubly so if you're straining to see it on either of the two sunny days of the year.

It won't fit; the TomTom uses a dedicated, 'active' mount which isn't the 'four hole plate' design. You need to mount the satnav onto the mount if you want to charge it or use headphones. I bought a broken mount off of eBay so I could just mount the electronics onto the unit without the large sucker gubbins.
