So... my bike has been off the road for a year while i had work done on her, paintjob and other things.
I SORN the bike and the MOT expired some time last year too...
Now i want to put her back on the road in the next couple of months, but how do i go about taxing and testing the bike?
If i ride to the MOT garage and get pulled, well... i have no tax and no MOT and they would never believe i was on my way to get it MOT'd...
And i cant tax the bike without an MOT.
I dont have any other way of getting the bike to the MOT other than riding as i dont have a trailor and the garage isnt within walking distance.

So what is the legal way to go around this?

You pre-book your MOT with the garage, so that there's proof of your intention to get the bike tested... and you get the bike taxed asap after the MOT.
Just make sure that you make the most direct trip from your home to and from the test centre

So i just ride their untaxed and without an MOT.
Surely the police wouldnt accept that i was on my way to the MOT station then directly to the post office.
Assumptions would say i was riding without tax or MOT then making excuses when pulled...

as said, it is 100% legal to drive to a prebooked MOT without tax and MOT, but you MUST have insurance.

one last note, you can't legally ride from the mot centre to the post office, get stopped and depending on the copper you will get charged for not having tax, they expect you to take the bike straight home then proceed to the post office another way, retarded i know but unlike an mot where you can prove by pre booking your going there you can't really prove your going to the post office and not just driving without tax although if you had all the documents to get tax id hope an officer would be sensible about it

In which case you could tax it online and print out the confirmation when you get back from the MOT place. Its all done via computer now so should show up on the direct.gov website fairly quickly.

Hi

As above. You can ride to a pre booked MOT (make sure they make a note of the registration number when you book it), and you must ride directly to / from the MOT station (although there is case law in support of allowing you to stop for petrol on that journey), so as thomp1983 says no stopping to tax the bike on the way home

Won't get you off an arsey copper doing you for failing to display the tax disk.

All the best

I think you get 5 days from applying for it online before you should have recieved the disc and display it IIRC.

As long as you applied before the end of the current disk.

Only applies if you apply online for the tax disk before the old one expires. This bike has been off the road for ages so this won't apply.

All the best

I had the same predicament recently and booked the bike in for a MOT , luckily for me the post office is on the route between the garage and my house so i taxed it on the way home Smile

True, but in my experience the new tax disc comes through within a few days anyway. Longest I had to wait was five days and that was when we were heaing towards Christmas and things were taking a little longer anyway.

True, and can't say I would worry too much about it. Just that if you do get an arsey copper or one looking for a justification for having pulled you over you have no real defence.

All the best

If the OP did get pulled over he needs to bat his eyelashes and play dumb in a flirty way! It will either a) confuse the copper and earn a fine/beatdown or b) get a laugh and told to sling yer 'ook sunny.

Im betting probably a) as the more likely!

Ah I see can only remember a little from the email I received, lucky me with a post office just down the road from the garage where I get mine MOT'd Mr. Green

But if I did have far to go then the chances of spying a quiet post office on the route home would tempt me.

Insurance you MUST have, no excuses or exceptions.

You MUST have the MOT pre-booked, and a copy of an appointment or booking confirmation would do no harm incase you do get stopped.

There are only a few exceptions to riding on the road without tax or MOT, and they are if to/from an MOT testing station to a pre-booked test, and/or to a garage where work will be carried out on the vehicle.

If the vehicle fails the MOT and is deemed DANGEROUS by the tester, then I do not believe you are allowed to ride it on the road until that problem is rectified, i.e. you'll need a trailer if you are at a test-only place and not a test & repair place.

Once you got an MOT, you can get tax... but you require both MOT and insurance to get the tax disc issued.

One thing I have noticed from personal whoopsy experience is that VOSA, unlike the DVLA, do not inform you that the MOT is going to expire, so I quite happily unwittingly carried on driving my car for 4 months with no MOT. I KNOW I drove past police ANPR cameras, but it seems they are only linked to tax/insurance, and not MOTs.

I now stick a note on the calendar 2 months before it expires so I can get a test booked in plenty of time.

On a slight tangent... does anybody know the answer to the following?
If your MOT expires, say, 15th April 2012, you can get the MOT done anytime from 15th March 2012 and it will still last until 15th APRIL 2013. If you got it tested on 20th March 2012, and it FAILED, does the current MOT still apply until 15 April, or does the current MOT immediately expire as soon as the car fails?

True, but if you do ride off/drive away the data protection act means they can't tell on you.

A failed mot doesn't kill your current one, so you would still be ok until 15th April.

Ah thanks for clearing that up.

I've got a feeling my car will fail on something this time, so I'm going to try get it tested as early as possible giving me longer to sort out the problem incase it does fail, but at the same time don't want to test it too early incase if flukes a pass

Funny that, because i'm fairly sure my insurance wont let you start the policy if you have no MOT o.O
