Just had an e-mail promo from Triumph with the freebies they are giving away on certain models. The Daytona goodies look quite nice, Arrow and a quick shifter!

I'm rather suprised that they fee the need to throw so much at the Daytona, I thought that was selling reasonably anyway!

I think they made around £20m profit last year, possibly driven by the number of people that believe they are getting a good deal with all the 'free' extras.

AFAIK Triumph have been doing it for years. When I brough my bike last year there wasn't any offers but when I asked for the price of an alarm and exhaust the sales guy said "Don't worry, we'll pay for them". List price was around £500-600 for just those bits.

I think it's common knowledge that aftermarket OEM stuff has a decent markup. Every time I've brought something from Staffordshire Triumph they have given me a discount which makes me feel a bit happier with parting with the cash next time.

Yeah, its pretty common. When I bought my ST it came with £800 of 'free' stuff, and they'd stopped charging for the boxes. Deals come and go to persuade people to act now instead of waiting - Feb is pretty prime time for that kinda thing.

Kawasaki have a similar deal on the ZX6R at the moment, free Akrapovic can, double-bubble and seat cowl. Just standard promotional stuff to edge a buyer towards them over the other billion sports 600s out there.

Heck, Suzuki are just leaving £650 - £1000 on the table until the end of April, although I expect the pressure on dealers to claw that back for sticker-price extras (which you'd likely have got for nowt anyway without the cashback deal) is pretty high.

x-post from Biking News, Triumph are one of the few marques who have actually increased sales since 2009, and all of that is on bikes with good margins. Suzuki's sales have more than halved in 2 years, no wonder they're desperate to shift stock.

That data is really interesting Roger as it's funny to see that due to the economy at the moment manufacturers like Lexmoto/Peugeot etc that do cheap bikes that are cheap to run are seeing their sales skyrocket.

How long until almost all the main manufacturers start releasing and pushing such bikes very hard? .

Sure, most of the "good" news is in the scooter and 125 sector (although "Adventure Sports" have taken over from sportsbikes as the new mid-life-crisismobiles). Look at Honda and Yamaha swapping places - I'd bet my lid a lot of that is down to the the CBF eating sales out of the YBR.

Suzuki were languishing in 6th and 7th place all last year except for September where a similar "£1 off per cc" offer did briefly pop them back up to #2. It'll be very interesting to see if they can maintain that to the end of April, if anyone else responds, and what happens afterwards - have Suzuki essentially devalued their bikes permanently? How many do they expect to shift in May when they've just "added" £650 - £1000 to the price again?
