Few quick questions.

My restriction is up soon, so I send my license off to DVLA right?
How long does this normally take?
When should I do this?

Cheers.

You don't have to send your license, whether you do or not, the <=25kw code will be invalid, once you're 2 years past your test date.

If you DO decide to send your license off for renewal, I suggest you tactically "lose" it, then get a replacement sent out, in order that should they bollox it up, you can then miraculously "find" it.

This thread may be well worth perusing.

Nowhere on my license does it mention that the <25kw is just for two years though. Some daft copper might have issues with that, which is one of the reasons i'm gonna get a replacement.

So if I ask for a replacement after the pass date of my test, they should send me one free of charge and without the restriction mentioned?

Cheers for the info and the heads up on the MCN article.

Check the back of your counterpart, section 2 "Motorcyclists - special conditions" - that states that 25kW or 0.16kW/kg is only valid for 2 years, not counting any period of disqualification.

If you ask for a replacement and state that it's been lost, it will cost you £20 I believe.

<Hetzer>Then tell the ignorant fascist pig to stick his snout in 91/439/EEC and read it with his fat piggy eyes.</Hetzer>

Ahem. By all means, get a new copy with the restriction removed and the From date moved forwards 2 years, but under no circumstances surrender your current photocard with your actual From date on it, you'll need that to show to equally clueless insurers.

I never removed my restriction off my licence, no point. Doubt a copper knows how to convert kW to hp anyway.

So I may as well just keep the one I've got after all.

Anybody else crossed this bridge? What did you do? The same as drzsta or something different?

I intend to keep the same license when I get there, unless I have some other reason to get a new copy.

I have another 3 months left and been reading the threads on losing 2 years on the license thing with interest

IIRC my photo license will expire pretty shortly after my restriction is up- so I will have to apply for the new one (with a more aged photo attached) and I guess surrender my current one

From the info I have gleaned it appears that there's not a lot I can do to prevent the last 2 years being deleted from the license and its just the way DVLA operate

I have been with the same insurer throughout my biking history so far - from first wobblings around on L's CG125 that got me through my tests to my present day "collection" so I hopefully wont need to argue much with them ref when I passed my tests (more than likely will be renewing with them as long as they dont pull any wierdness)

AFAIU - in theory nothing will change or affect ME till I either come to make a claim (and they suddenly want to see my license and don't get whats going on/happened ) or if I change insurers and they dont ask the question clearly enough

I will possibly pose questions come renewal and see if they would like a copy of my license to keep on record and see what they make of the confusing situation

I will of course be photocopying all docs and plastic card prior to surrendering!

Regards
Rob

Edited as I only have 3 months left!...thought it was 4

Just so happened to be in my local DVLA office today (on a tax disk run for work)
after getting that all sorted I slapped my card license on the desk and got her to look at the dates and codes to verify when it would need renewing (next year) and asked about the dates being fudged issue

she wasn't aware that they would be taking 2 years off my card if I surrendered it and couldn't help on the whys/wherefores and said I would need to ask Swansea if I needed clarification

Her take on it was....
"loose my card" come photocard renewal time (I will have to pay the £20 anyway- and they don't double charge so nothing to loose by retaining the old card) and not surrender it so I have the correct pass date on there if it was ever needed in the future

Regards
Rob

Keep it for the 10 years... Then you have proof you passed on the test on the date you took it..

Once you get to 10 years, regardless of 2 years or not- insurance would probably be the same price so it wouldn't really matter then..

Shocked What the what? But... that's... what? Did a DVLA goon really tell you to fvck them off and do the sensible thing? I wonder if that's one of the offices that's being closed down and they don't give a stuff any more.

Meh, personally I'd just wait until you change your address then you don't need to pay anything. Wink

Shocked My photocard runs out 2013 so that would mean me having to sell this house and buy another house by next year to try and avoid a £20 fee..which is a bit extreme (still missing walls here 7 years after knocking stuff down - so no way I could consider selling)

(maybe it wasn't directed at me?)

Yes... it was one of the offices that is under threat
and yes I did sign their petition to keep it open as it does get me out from behind a desk at work every now and again

If it does close down it would put a huge pinch/strain on my works and will directly cause a loss of earnings and more hassles/paperwork to chase if we only had Swansea and postal comunication left

Regards
Rob
