PostPosted: 23:20 - 11 Jan 2012    Post subject: Booked Mod 1..... Reply with quote

Howdy, been riding my trusty Ybr for a year now on my daily commute to work and have decided its about time to complete my test. Booked my mod 1 for 30th January, not planning on taking any training, just going to trust that I've aquired some riding skills in the last year.

Any advice?

Welcome to the forum Thumbs Up

The Mod1 test isn't too hard, but it's easy to fail (yes I know, a contradiction right there!)

When in the test centre treat is as if it was an actual road, which means do the appropriate shoulder and mirror checks before doing any manoeuvre or moving off.

On the slow stuff make sure not to put your feet down, I believe you will fail for doing this. On the rest you may put your feet down but it counts as a minor (again, I think.)

It may well be work downloading the Mod1 layout from the Direct-Gov website and setting out some of the course with a few bottles or cones, just to get some practise.

With the high speed parts try and come around the corner at about 19-20mph in 2nd. Don't bother changing up to 3rd at all. You should be able to just pin it in 2nd coming out of the corner to get over the required speed. Getting marginally under the speed will count as a minor, but you can still pass so don't worry about that.

On the emergency stop some people recommend just pretending to use the back brake and actually stop just using the front. This removes the risk of locking the rear wheel and failing the test. During the emergency stop also, don't be a fool like I was and change down gears during! Laughing

Oh, and ask the examiner if you're unsure about anything, or even just for reassurance & clarification Thumbs Up

But, arguably the most important point about it all, try not to get nervous! Smile Good luck Thumbs Up

Thanks for the reply dude....

Lots of good advice there. I'll use it all......I guess if anything nerves will be my downfall. It's an early morning test so I plan on getting there in good time to steady myself......

Another good point is that you will be tested as soon as you get on your bike.So when you get to the test center.park your bike facing outwards of the parking bay. This will give you 1 less thing to think about .And al.ways mirror mirror shoulder check before pulling of.. Very Happy

And the very best of luck to you Thumbs Up Very Happy Thumbs Up

I passed my mod 1 today with no faults. However I had about 4 hours training and without that I think it may have been a different story. I would highly recommend some training just to take you through it properly. Good luck

Good luck!

Best advice I was given before mod 1 was find a quiet car park or similar area and practice the day before. I used the width of 2 parking spaces for the U turn and it made the turn space on the test seem excessive.

Think positive, £15 test fee is a lot less than a typical hour training.
Go with an open mind... It's a bonus when you pass Smile

It's a piece of piss, don't bother with training, just practise your slow speed manoeuvres, don't put your feet down, and for the emergency brake, just cover the back brake and use the front to stop.

Seriously, as long as you use mirrors etc (which does feel very odd in an empty car park) you will get through it easily.

Cheers for the replies guys.........

Yeah, I think I'll find a quiet car park and practice the day before. I guess its worth having a pop without training. Just hope I can find the test centre!

Test date changed to the 31st!

Been up to try and find the test centre but failed miserably!

Has anyone else done their mod 1 in Darlington? I managed to find the location as far as Google says but no sign of a test centre, just a massive Orange call-centre!

Panic!

So......failed on the 31st, locked the back wheel on the emergency stop! Don't even know why I used the back brake, never done that before....

Rebooked it straight away and did some training on Saturday morning in preparation for the second attempt tomorrow afternoon.

Fingers crossed!

Good luck pal! I failed on my first attempt also - foot down on u-turn Sad Just rested my foot on the rear brake and only used front on my emergency stops...examiner didn't seem to notice I weren't actually pressing it - that was the advice my instructor gave to me!

Failed first attempt too - kicked the cone during emergency swerve. Got back home, didn't even take my shoes off - booked it asap. Passed with no minors. And then Mod 2 with 3 minors.

First fail doen't mean you can't pass. More like .. not as confident Smile

Mod 2 isn't so bad, thoroughly enjoyed mine other than getting a fly in my eye; I left my visor up, then was too worried about pulling over to get the fly out encase he failed me for it... so I was there rapidly blinking trying to get the bloody thing out and oh so very nearly missed a 30 sign (was coming from NSL) Laughing

Treat it as a ride out and you should be fine. Remember the mirror checks regularly, shoulder checks and to cancel your indicators. Also, remember to indicate even in dedicated lanes. Mirror check before changing speeds as well (i.e. 30 to 60, 60 to 40, etc) Thumbs Up I got a minor because I didn't think it was necessary to indicate right in a right-hand-only lane.

Dilyan, a failed attempt is merely a practise run Wink
