Hey all, any ideas why my torrent dl speed has changed so much over this one torrent? My connection speed is still up at 20mbps.

Torrents are Peer-to-peer connections, it depends how many people your seeding from, some have 1kb/s upload some have 100kb/s etc, but its all split between x amount of other people also... and it downloads different parts off each person...

Torrents are just like that...

oh and "up to 20mb" is exactly what it says, you can get "up to" 20mb, but it doesnt guarentee it... I have "up to 20mb" too, but there is no fibre optic here, so I barely even get 8mb at the best of times.

You're only connected to 37 out of the 900 peers. Try changing the settings to increase the total connected peers or max peers per torrent.
Torrents are variable by their nature and shouldn't really be thought of as being like HTTP or FTP downloads. If you want something that downloads constantly at maximum speeds look into newsgroups, but expect to have to pay a tenner a month or so.

I didn't say I had an "up to 20mbps line" I meant I had a 20mbps dl speed at the time of posting lol.

And I see, so when the dl torrent speed was high, there were high speed connection uploaders, but now they have disconnected and it's just slower speed uploaders. I understand it now. Smile

Yeh, you are downloading from other people and people are downloading it off you at the same time. That is why it is called file sharing.

They've not necessarily disconnected, they might just have a limited number of upload slots which other people are using. Torrent speed is effected by the number of people downloading as well as the number uploading.

Some ISP's also throttle torrent traffic either all the time or at certain times of the day, or once you've downloaded more than a certain amount of data.

So like i said, don't depend of torrents to be fast, though they can be. Queue a bunch of stuff up that you want and limit it's download speed so your connection is still fine for browsing and just forget about it till the next day, or leave it running over night.

I'd need a change of underwear if I even got 800kbps Evil or Very Mad
I downloaded two videos the other day (250mb each) and two albums. Started them at about midnight and the last one finished at about 3AM.

Also, I agree with all the P2P comments everyone else has already said, and Frost's comment about ISPs limiting P2P connection speeds.

Personally I've found that I get the best speeds overnight when all the Americans come online. I get around 250kbps to 300kbps. Don't get too jealous.
