I'm due to be moving home soon from Manchester to South-Shields, now..I plan on riding my Honda city fly up there, the question is, will it survive a 146 mile all in 1 go? I've only done much shorter stints on it so far.

I rode my city fly for a good few hundred miles all in one go. Handled it easily. Used to do regular stints of about 80 miles or so too, and it never missed a beat. It'll be fine Thumbs Up

Nothing wrong with longer distances on a 125, you just have to be prepared for the journey to take longer than it would whacking it at 70 *ahem* up the motorway.

I went up to the peak district and the cat and fiddle on my Varadero, as well as 2-3 trips down to Exeter, all from Oxford. As a matter of fact I'd say doing a longer trip will give you a bit more confidence on the bike and you'll probably quite enjoy it. I did Smile.

A guy called John Bryden did more than 7000 miles in one stint last year to raise money for charity. I'm sure that 146 is no great shakes.

I did not far off 400 miles on my gs125. To be fair the last 40 were on the back of a breakdown truck but it had been raining since midday and it took till about 11pm to breakdown.

good stuff, nothing to worry about then! yeah i'll probably stop off for a snack on the way, luckily the bike is darn comfy to ride so shouldn't be too achy.

Not much in the way of motorway from here to south shields so even if i had a full license and bigger bike it would probably take nearly as long.

Hmm... yeah... 146 miles.... thats a big worry, becouse once you have got moving you cant possibly STOP until you get to where your going can you?!

Dear-Dear! I dont know what you are worried about. Miles is miles and the bike wont care much whether it does 23,000 one mile trips to the shops, or one round the world epic adventure!

Make sure the things serviced; do your normal pre-ride checks; keep your wits about you; stop when tired or confused or lost exploring; dont thrash the thing; dont rush, enjoy the journey.

Make sure you have sensible/useful stuff with you for the ride; MONEY; for petrol, a coffee at a stop, or any other eventuality; mobile phone; AA relay card; MAP... preferably one covering where you start and where you hope to finish; even if you have a GPS.... maps dont need batteries and are more resistant to being dropped in puddles and things;

if you smoke FAGS, and source of ignition, better still a 'spare' just in case. Nothing worse than being stressed out, pissed off and gasping then being in same, and not having a fag, other than being in same, HAVING a fag... and nothing to light it!

Dont over load the bike with 'kit' & if you are carrying luggage, make sure weight is all as low as you can get it;

Eg; packing camping 'stuff' you put the heavy camping stove and tns of beans in the bottom of the throw-over paniers, light bulky fluffy stuff like sleeping bag, bungied on the top of the tote on the tail or pillion.

Make sure some-one knows where you are going; make sure any-one expecting you the other end, wont be fretting, if it takes longer than expected.

Have FUN... its just like riding to the shops...... only more so!

You'll be fine, just make a day of it, plan in some stops, see some sights, larks all round.

While I remember, I'd recommend getting a "crampbuster"

https://i2.squidoocdn.com/resize/squidoo_images/250/draft_lens11200551module128393431photo_1287872377cramp.jpg

Dead simple idea, really takes the strain off holding the throttle on.

Cheers for the advice guys! Yeah i'll be packing a flask, and essentials and basic tools in my top box, like you say i'm probably worrying for nothing, just never ridden that far before. Doesn't matter really what time i get there so plan to take my time and take in some of the scenery.

It will be fine, as has been said take breaks and relax. I once went from Torquay to salisbury, from salisbury to weston supermare, back to salisbury then salisbury to petersfield then petersfield to Canterbury arriving at about 2am, I did that on a 50cc two stroke... It was a long painful 24 hours, fortunately I had bluetooth built into my helmet and could play music through it, kept me going. Good luck and enjoy the ride

might take a few detours and have an explore, have a sat nav to get back on track and will have maps aswell. Could listen to music with the sat nav but i'd ratherpay full attention this time. maybe in future long rides i'll use it.

Plan breaks!

Long periods of driving is more tiring than you realise until it comes and bites you in the bum!

No reason why you can't do the distance. If you're going alone, just make sure you've got all the essentials such as break down details, basic tools, water proofs etc.

Stop around every hour or so, stretch your legs. Make sure you stay hydrated! It's easier than you realise to dehydrate!

Make a day of it. Have some fun Very Happy

Try using google maps to plan your trip - the live traffic option will give you a rough idea of road speeds at particular times of the day, and days of the week.

Plan at least two half-hour stops - 125's can be more tiring than bigger bikes or cars, but the Honda should easily cope with the distance.

Whitburn is a nice area even might have a villagey feel to it.

I'm just down the road in Sunderland, so if I can help with anything in the future just give me a shout.

aye in with a mackem heh, she lived in sunderland nearish the centre until a couple of weeks back, off hylton road...nice area like...o_O

from what i've seen on google maps etc whitburn looks pretty peaceful..probably just silent unreported murders organised by the community resulting in everyone having new patios.

Gonna be weird getting used to the area so reckon i'll have a proper long ride about to try and gain some barings once i've got my gear up there.
